Google Is Near Twitch Acquisition for $1 billion

Talks between Google and Twitch were underway for an acquisition or merger of Twitch with YouTube. These talks had been going on for a while and then it seemed that the talks had stopped or slowed down considerably.

Reports are now confirming the fact that Google and Twitch have come to an agreement on the matter. It seems that Google has agreed to pay them $1 billion but its unclear what this merger will exactly mean for the site.

We still don’t know if this is the exact price or when this news will be officially announced but we do know that the guys who run Twitch are happy that they will be able to make a lot more money than they invested into their site.

Google even tried to deny any rumors about the deal. That is why its even more of a surprise that it is settled now.

For those who don’t know, Twitch is a video streaming service dedicated to gamers and video games. Gamers can broadcast live gameplay footage on Twitch. This website rivals YouTube in its niche.

Recently the number of users on Twitch has increased to 50 million. Gamers share videos of their achievements in the video game and walkthroughs showing how to beat a game.

Neither Google nor Twitch has officially announced the deal as of yet but all the sources are pointing to the same possibility.

Google bought youtube for $1.65 billion in 2006.

If you are a user of Twitch.tv then tell us what you think about this merger / buyout. How do you think this will affect the service? Are you excited or is this a disappointment for you?

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 likely to be announced this September

Korean tech giant Samsung has been following a disciplinary routine when it comes to launching its flagship device. Earlier in the year at the MWC, the company announces its S series flagships and later at during September at the IFA it announces its Note series. With much rumors surrounding the upcoming Galaxy Note 4, it is now said that the premium flagship would arrive on September 3rd just before the commencement of IFA. The 2014 IFA event which is scheduled at Berlin from 5-10 September. The Korea Times  has recently reported that the company is likely to make an announcement soon by sending the media invites.

Samsung seems to be gearing up with its plans as it might want to put its premium handset in the market ahead of the much touted Apple iPhone 6. Samsung Electro-Mechanics Chief Financial Officer Kwon Young-noh said “Samsung Note 4 will have far better specifications than the Galaxy S5 smartphone.”

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is tipped to host a 5.7inch display with 2560×1440 QHD pixel resolution and would come in two versions one of them having curved display. The device is also supposed to have a 3GB of RAM, Snapdragon 805 SoC, a 16MP camera with OIS and ultraviolet sensor. The device is likely to have a all metal construction. In addition, an executive at Samsung’s software partner recently said that “The Note 4 will be the first smartphone to incorporate an ultraviolet sensor. Xiaomi Mi4 pre-orders begin in Italy, to launch in August

Chinese giant Xiaomi recently unveiled its new flagship smartphone Xiaomi Mi4 touted to be “the fastest phone in the world.” Well, Italy will be the first country in Europe to get this handset. Xiaomi Mi4 is up for pre-order with Xiaomi’s Italian distributor and the device will be shipped sometime in August.

Xiaomi Mi4 is priced at €394.90 (around $530) and is available in two colors, Black and White. This version of the handset does not support LTE networks in Europe. The LTE version may be offered at a later date and so will the 64GB one which is available in Asia.

The device will come with a 5-inch Full HD 1080p display and is powered with Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core SoC clocked up to 2.5GHz and Adreno 330 GPU. It has a 3GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, a 13MP primary camera capable of recording 4k vide, an 8MP front-facing camera and a powerful 3080mAh battery. Xiaomi Mi4 runs the latest Android 4.4.2 KitKat with company’s own MIUI v6.

Xiaomi Mi4 - pre-order

The main appeal of the handset is its attractive price tag. Looking to the specs and performance of Xiaomi Mi4 which are comparable to flagship smartphones of other companies such as LG G3, Samsung Galaxy S5 or HTC One M8, its price is considerably less.

In Italy, Xiaomi is offering the device through its distributor and it might do so for other countries outside China as well. This may deter some users from buying it as they may fear lack of future support.

If you want to pre-order the phone, you can check out the mi-italia website. It is worth noting that since this is a pre-order and not a pre-registration, you’ll have to pay up the money while ordering.

Broadcom Eliminated from the Competition

Yes, this is the sad news for the week. However, nothing is ever done in business without a purpose. Sometimes we have to end something to start a new venture or to focus on other things that we already we know can do better with, which is the case for Broadcom.

Let us take a retrospect first of its contribution to the mobile market. Broadcom rolled out the first Android-enabled mobile phone platform which supports high definition camcorder, video player and 12mp-capable digital camera applications. Back in 2006, they set up 3G mobile phones for the price of 2G phones made possible by the then new CellAirity.

But through the years, Broadcom has been losing pace in the competition. And now it is really hard for them to catch up with their rival Qualcomm. They can still retail baseband units; however, there is no guarantee to the sale success. So, they had to come up to this unfortunate decision, which according to CEO Scott McGregor would help the company reduce its losses and instead focus their resources on its core strengths, which are evidently set-top boxes and cable TV-related hardware, Internet connectivity and infrastructure tech. McGregor already spilled the beans about transitioning to Ultra HD and H.265 as potential plans of the company. With regard to this, Broadcom is anticipated to scale down up to 20% of its workforce which is about 2,500 employees.

Do you think Broadcom made the right decision? Feel free to comment!

Allwinner set to launch its first 64-bit tablet processor soon

Chinese chipmaker Allwinner has announced that its first 64-bit tablet processor will be launched in the market by the end of this year. The company plans to provide affordable tablet processors to ODM/OEM companies and end users throughout the world.

Allwinner’s 64-bit tablet chipset will support 4K, H.265 video codec and a demo version of the chipset will be ready for the Hong Kong electronics fair to be held in October 2014.

Not many details of Allwinner’s 64-bit tablet processor are known other than the fact that it will be based on ARMv8-A architecture. The name for the new chipset has also not been revealed yet. A few months ago the company had unveiled UltraOcta A80 processor that uses ARM’s big.LITTLE multi-processing design having four high-end Cortex-A15 and four low-power Cortex-A7 cores.

Allwinner technology

JackLee, Chief Marketing Officer of Allwinner says,”The 64-bit era is absolutely the new trend. As one of the most important strategic partners of ARM, Allwinner will team with ARM to take the lead in providing highly cost-effective 64-bit tablet solutions.” The company has shifted from 32-bit to 64-bit technology and the ARMv8 based processors give better and more energy-efficient performance.

Although Allwinner is not known much in the western part of the world, it has a sizable share in the white-box tablet market in China. The company has been the top supplier of Android tablet chipsets both in 2012 and 2013. However, this year it is facing tough competition from Intel and MediaTek.

Lenovo K920 Takes the Spotlight

If Apple has the iPhone 6 and Samsung has the Samsung Galaxy S5 F. Lenovo is brewing the K920. The latest flagship smartphone of the said brand, which is confirmed to be launched this coming August 5. Count few days from now, and we would be able to finally take a look at the smartphone’s body from below the rear camera.

Lenovo’s marketing has left us all curious with the teaser Wang Yan, company’s marketing General Manager, has openly handed to the public. It has given us very little details about the handset. But one very specific feature though – it guaranties the quality of a 16mp rear camera. Nevertheless, Lenovo K920 has given us a room to be filled in with our imaginations and rumors.

On that note, what should we expect from Lenovo K920? A buzz has been going on saying it will flaunt a 6-inch (2560 x 1440 pixels) display. From the image the company has given us, it has become a starting point for assumptions that K920 would be an all-metal smartphone, housing a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset with quad core 2.5GHz processor together with 3GB of RAM, matching wits with the LG G3’s metal case. Like all other smartphones to be released, K920 is expected to operate on Android KitKat 4.4. It would sport a 5 megapixel front shooter, a very enticing feature I must say since it can produce quality selfies, which is a worldwide trend.

No words yet are released regarding Lenovo K920’s pricing and availability. But hey, August 5 is just a few sleeps away!

iPhone 6 images with screen protectors show up in online retailer listing

Apple’s iPhone 6 is much in the news these days. As the launch date of the next gen Apple iPhone draws closer, the speculations, leaks and rumors are catching up speed. This time Xtreme Guard, the online retailer of screen protectors, body skins and shields for smartphones has listed screen protectors for 4 variants of iPhone 6.

AppleiPhone6

Xtreme Guard is offering screen protectors for iPhone 6 with 4.7” and 5.5” displays as well as for iPhone 6c also with 4.7“and 5.5” displays. The online retailer has posted images of these variants with screen protectors on its website. Earlier in the month, Amazon Japan had listed iPhone 6 with similar pictures.

iPhone6 5.5

Already the iPhone 6′s alleged features such as the sapphire screen, 13MP camera, touch ID sensor etc. are doing the rounds. Online retailers have started taking pre-orders for the Apple’s much awaited iphone. Accessory makers are trying to cash in on the tremendous curiosity and anticipation generated among the fans about Apple’s upcoming iPhone. Spigen has earlier posted iPhone 6 design cases in its listing. And now we have its other accessories in the form of screen guards by Xtreme Guard.

The iPhone design that emerges from the leaked images is a slim frame with rounded thin edges. Only the actual unveiling of the device by Apple probably on September 19 will tell us how many of these rumors and leaks are true.

Puppy Pop:The first game to be played on LG QuickCircle case

Are you using LG G3 with a QuickCircle Case? Apart from checking the time, placing calls and taking photos, you can now have a bit of fun on-the-go with a free match-three puzzle game, Puppy Pop. Puppy Pop was recently launched by LG as the first mobile game developed exclusively for its windowed LG G3.

The Puppy Pop game accommodates itself rather nicely in the tiny circle instead of the 5.5 inch QHD screen. It is not a graphic laden game and is something much simpler and easier to play. It can be played without opening the case and waking up the device.

The gameplay consists of several puppy faces stacked up and you are required to draw a line with 3 matching puppies so that they pop and you get points for that. The game has a time deadline and the objective of the game is to score as much as possible in the given time. LG have added some bonuses in the game just to groom it up a little bit.

The LG QuickCircle was launched along with the LG G3 and a double tap on the circular window will wake up the device to show the messages, settings and music controls. LG has allowed the developers access to the source code so that they can integrate it in their application.

The Puppy Pop is available for download from the Google Play but to play it you will need to own a LG G3 and spend some bucks to buy the quick circle case.

LG patent indicating a cellular smartwatch

An interesting looking LG patent has just passed through the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Nothing unfamiliar so far, LG patents plenty of phone designs, but when we look at the actual documentation, the device looks much more like a smartwatch than a smartphone.

The patent application reveals a smartwatch capable of receiving or sending out phone calls and text messages. This corresponds to the rumors of LG working on cellular version of G Watch in response to their competitor Samsung’s Gear 2.

The LG patent is titled “Capacative type stylus and mobile terminal comprising the same”, which makes it sound like the filing was authorized through Google Translate from its original Korean without an English edit. It also doesn’t really explain what the device is. Essentially, the device is projected to be a smartwatch/smartband on your wrist, but a stylus when you take it off.

So apparently LG has something new up their sleeve relating to a future hybrid wearable device. With its rather large interface, it concludes that LG is aiming this mobile phone to accommodate Skype-like video conferencing – on your wrist. Could this hybrid device interest the mobile executive? Only time will tell.

Below are the most distinguished patent figures covering LG’s latest patent design.

Google Play Store Ascending

google-play2

As the title suggests, Google Play Store is doing some improvements with its pages. Pages are being updated as I am sharing you this. Google has announced the coming of Android L prior to this about a month ago. Certain changes are expected on this new Google Play Store 4.1.13. But the thing is would this new experiment of a new material design work? Would it be user-friendly and not solely concentrated on the design?

play-store-homepage-e1406100796651

The main page has not been updated. I can’t disclose yet if it is their intention to keep it that way. The most remarkable changes took place in individual content pages for apps and other media. What other alterations to expect in the user experience? Now, once you tap an app description, it expand full screen instead of the section enlarging like how it used to. The Changelogs app is also relocated if you haven’t installed the app, but remains the same position for already installed apps. And video trailer of certain applications, it will go over the top of the page. If you quite familiar with the old version of Google Play Store, you can easily notice these changes. The dedicated share button is now beside the +1 button. There are improvements in UI too.

The Android L is rumoured to be wholly released this fall, so until then we can still expect for changes in Google Play Store. What can you say about the updates for the Google Play Store? Is the navigation favourable?

iTunes Festival 2014 line-up:Kylie, Pharrell and Maroon 5 to headline

Apple has announced the lineup for its next iTunes Festival in London, with music stars including Kylie Minogue, Maroon 5 and “Happy” singer Pharrell Williams set to perform at the month-long event in September.

Other musicians already confirmed for the iTunes festival include David Guetta, Beck, Sam Smith, Kasabian and Blondie. The performances will take place at the Roundhouse venue in Camden, with more than 60 artists expected to play.

As in previous years, the concerts will be streamed online by Apple, with fans able to watch on their iPhones, iPads and iPod touch devices, or on their televisions via the company’s Apple TV set-top box.

Apple is planning to make the live streams available in more than 100 countries, although in a break from previous years, they will be streamed through the iTunes store on iOS devices, rather than forcing iOS users to download a dedicated app for the occasion.

Tickets will be allocated via the company’s customary online lottery, with fans entering their details on the festival’s website to try to win tickets. Media partners for this year’s festival include Global Radio and the Evening Standard newspaper, who’ll be running their own competitions.

“The iTunes Festival in London is back with another stunning line-up of world class performers and tremendous new acts,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “These live shows capture the heart and soul of iTunes and we love bringing them to our customers in the Roundhouse, as well as to the millions of people watching all over the world for free.”

The announcement of the next London event follows the iTunes Festival’s first international expansion in March, when Apple hosted concerts by artists including Coldplay, Pitbull and Soundgarden  during the SXSW conference in Austin, Texas. For the U.S. version, fans with Apple TVs were able to watch live performances on by tuning in to Sony’s Vevo channel.

It is also possible that Apple will use the September itunes festival for the UK launch of one or both of its streaming music services, iTunes Radio and Beats Music.

Both initially launched in the US only – Beats Music before Apple agreed to buy its parent company for $3bn in May, with that deal expected to close in the near future. iTunes Radio launched in Australia in February, but neither is yet accessible in the UK.

For the latest lineup updates and concert scheduling, Apple has reactivated the @itunesfestival Twitter account and corresponding Facebook page.

Motorola Rumored to be Working on a 5.9-inch Nexus 6 Smartphone Shamu

A lot of speculation is going on about which company is developing the Nexus 6 for Google. At first it was thought to be LG but LG had denied working on any Google projects.  Then there were rumors about a new HTC 8.9-inch tablet codenamed Volantis to be the Nexus 8 or Nexus 9 Tablet. It is also rumored that Google would put a stop to the Nexus line and focus on its Android Silver program.

However, a new rumor doing the rounds is that Motorola is working on the next Google Nexus device and that it could be unveiled in November this year. According to Android Police, Motorola is apparently working on a big 5.9-inch smartphone of unknown resolution bearing the codename ‘Shamu’ which is in line with Google’s practice of codenaming its nexus devices with names of sea-creatures. According to sources, the phablet will have a fingerprint sensor and would be released through major US carriers and some other international carriers.

The device Shamu has been spotted in Google’s issue tracker where a bug observed in the device has been reported. The bug that is reported is in Android L, Google’s upcoming new Android version announced at the Google I/O. Since Android L works with Nexus devices only, the rumor that Shamu could be the new Nexus smartphone gets credibility. It was also learnt that this issue has been reported by Spirent which is a company that tests devices for such type of bugs.

Apart from the large 5.9-inch screen and the fingerprint scanner, little else is known about the device. If rumors are true, the Nexus 6 phablet and the HTC Nexus 8.9 Volantis Tablet might be launched along with Android L that is scheduled to be released this fall. We will have to wait and watch what Google is actually planning to do.

Say Hello to Samsung Galaxy S5 Alpha!

You know how fast-paced and eager the mobile industry is? Almost every week you would hear of a new tablet computer, handset and other devices to watch out on. If last time I gave you some bits about the upcoming iPhone 6, today I have here some photos of the Samsung Galaxy S5 Alpha also known as the Samsung Galaxy S5 F. Hmm… Seems like another series of the Apple and Samsung rivalry. For one, the both handsets channel a 4.7-inch display.

It is expected to be released this coming August, a month earlier than iPhone 6’s launch date. Anyhow, what are we supposed to look forward on this one? The Galaxy S5 F is aid to be Sammy’s premium smartphone. And to give you an idea, here are some photos supposedly displayed on a Tihnte, a Vietnamese website, and SamMobile.

As you can see, the Galaxy Alpha brags of old and new look — an aluminium trim around its body and the almost traditional perforated back cover. Feedback also said that this midrange Android handset was a prettier although a smaller S5. Exciting features include a fingerprint scanner and 32GB of non-expandable internal. Unfortunately, I cannot give you yet the specifics of its pixel resolution, although you can narrow your expectation between 1,080 x 1,920 (Full HD) and 1,440 x 2,560 (Quad HD). But considering its screen size, let us cross our fingers it would be the Full HD. ;)

We want to hear what you think about it? Do you think this Samsung mobile phone is really a winner as many are saying right now?

Moto 360 will have an ambient light sensor which other Android Wear devices lack

Motorola’s upcoming Android Wear smartwatch, the Moto 360  is supposed to be launched late this summer. It is the only smartwatch to have a round watch face and according to a video released by TechCrunch, it will have an ambient light sensor in the little black bar at the bottom along with the display drivers.

No other Android Wear device has this ambient light display which will adjust the brightness of the display automatically according to the surrounding lighting conditions. This would save some battery usage of the device. Both the LG G Watch and Samsung Gear Live do not have such an ambient light sensor and the users have to adjust the brightness manually.

Motorola Moto 360 -1

The Moto 360 was showcased in the Google’s I/O last month and it was known that the black bar at the bottom of the smartwatch contains display drivers. However, little else about the watch is known apart from the fact that it could be charged wirelessly.

It turns out that Darrell Etherington of TechCrunch had a chat about the Moto 360 with Motorola’s Cathay Bi at the I/O itself where she showed the working of the device and told him about the presence of the ambient light sensor in the smartwatch (at the1.55 mark in the video). You can watch the video below:

At the moment, the Motorola Moto 360 seems to be a little more advanced as compared to its other Android Wear counterparts and is expected to provide a tough competition to them.

Back panel Apple logo could work as a notification for the upcoming iPhone 6

The Apple iPhone 6 news continue to exist and a recent rumor coming from some source shows that the Cupertino giant may use its famous Apple logo at the back of iPhone 6 as a notification light. Every time there is a new notification to your iPhone, the logo would light up even on placing the handset faced down.

Flashing up the Apple logo has already been in the company’s laptop MaC lineup, however it was without and functional use or indication. Bringing this logo as the notification light in the iPhone 6 could certainly prove to be very useful. This assumption is being based on the above image that shows the final design for the rear casing of the iPhone 6.

For all the previous iPhones, there were solid blocks with the back panel Apple logo engraved on it whereas in this case, looking inside the back panel, we could see a plastic blob in the middle where the Apple logo is to be supposedly placed. A small bit of plastic is inserted in the back casing which will allow the light to flash through it. With so much rumors floating, we cannot say this to be real deal unless we have any official word from the company and so we would like you to take this with a pinch of salt.
