Some of you might be wondering, what is meme? Memes are photos that are passed around the internet and tweaked by millions of viewers as they go along. Memes are made popular by Reddit community. Normally, memes start with a theme and has a comment on the top describing what the memes all about is in a witty way.


In this entry, we are going to list down a few memes and the characters in the meme and how they look like in the real life.


We start with “Success kid”. Success kid was a symbol of pure joy and excitement. He was taken by his mother when he was 11-month old at the beach in 2007 and when she posted it on Flickr, it went viral.

Now the “Success kid”, Sammy, is 8-years-old and he is using his internet fame to find kidney donor for his father.

“Cyring Piccolo Girl” is none other than Roxanne Chalifoux. Her internet fame got her a guest appearance on Jimmy Fallon’s show.

Do you know about “What does the fox say” music video that went viral on YouTube? It was watched over 336 million times. The video was released by Norwegian group consisting of two brothers, Ylvis.

Solar-powered SkyOrbiter internet drone successfully completes first test flight

The Portuguese startup Quarkson has developed a solar-powered drone that could provide wireless internet access to people and this drone called the SkyOrbiter, has successfully completed its first test flight recently. The company intends to use these solar-powered drones to make Wi-Fi facility available to offline areas around the world.

The SkyOrbiter drones will fly at the heights of up to 22,000 meters (72,000 ft.) and stay airborne for long period of time, say for some weeks, several months or even a few years. According to a report by Gizmag, the test flight was carried out on April 2 but the location of the test flight has not been disclosed. The SkyOrbiter had Wi-Fi transmitting equipment on board to provide internet access to the people below on the ground through a patch antenna that receives the signal from the drone.

A smaller version of the drone that would be actually used was tested. This drone had a wing span of 5 meters (16 ft.) and was flown up to an altitude of 100 meters (330 ft.). It was able to successfully transmit Wi-Fi signal below to the ground, proving that the project is viable.


Quarkson has also built a largeer SkyOrbiter LA25 drone that has a wing span of 22 meters (72 ft.) but according to the company’s CEO Miguel Angelo Martins da Silva, the Portuguese government has not allowed it’s testing. Nevertheless, it was tested on a small airstrip in poor conditions and data was collected which could be helpful to optimize prototypes.

The drones are fully autonomous having an autopilot, an energy management system, ground control software and a long range communication system working on various frequencies. The drones would be able to transmit via LTE or Wi-Fi on the unlicensed spectrum or via LTE, Wi-Fi, 3G or 2G on the licensed spectrum through a carrier.

Google to bring balloon-powered internet and Kite-powered energy to India

India will soon be one of the countries where Google plans to set up infrastructure to provide internet connectivity and power to people in remote areas. The Mountain View giant is reportedly in talks with the Indian Government to set up projects to provide balloon-powered internet and Kite-powered energy in the country.


Google’s “Project Loon” is an internet project under which Google plans to use balloons set up at a high altitude to provide low-cost internet to about 5 billion people across the globe who have currently no access to it.


Mohammad Gawdat, VP of business Innovation at Google X told The Times of India:


By 2016, we believe we can start to launch a commercial format that allows us to have coverage on every square inch of planet Earth. We are working very closely with telecom providers and governments across the world including India to see how we bring this innovation here”.

The balloons are sent up about 20 km high in the air. Its position is determined by software algorithms in the instruments based on wind direction. In a pilot project, about 30 such balloons were sent high up in the air in New Zealand’s South Island. These balloons were able to beam internet to a small group of people.


Google is also working on another project that uses kites sent up in the air to harness wind energy. Here, aeroplane-like kites tethered to cables are sent up in the sky up to 300 meters high. These kites fly in the air where the wind is the strongest. Wind moving across kite’s rotors rotates them with force, causing the generator to produce electricity. The electricity is then transmitted through the tether onto the grid.

We believe through this we should be able to get a 100% improvement on the current renewable technology out there. It will be available at a much cheaper cost,” said Gawdat.


He also said that looking to India’s interest in renewable energy, they are in talks with the Indian Government to deploy this technology in India. Google hopes to begin the wind power generation by 2016.
