Micromax Yu Yureka hashtag #YuPlayGod turned to #YuPlayFraud

Micromax’s Yu Yureka, India’s first Cyanogen powered smartphone went on flash sale on Tuesday via Amazon India and 10,000 units sold out in mere 3 seconds. According to the information provided by Micromax India, over 3 lakh registrations were done for 1st flash sale of  Yureka whereas only 10,000 units were up for sale.

Looking at Flipkart’s failure in managing huge traffic in initial flash sales of Xiaomi handsets, it looks like Amazon did not learn anything from Flipkart. As soon as the Yu flash sale (referred as Lightening Deal on Amazon) ended on Amazon-India, consumers  started posting their unsatisfactory experience on social platforms.

A lot of desperate buyers have reported that the sale begun before the actual scheduled time i.e 2pm. Many buyers, who managed to add YU Yureka in their cart were unable to checkout as the site crashed (HTTP Error 503). With over 300,000 registrations ended on 24th December itself, it clearly gives an idea how unprepared Amazon-India was for their first flash sale. This might be a marketing strategy to counter Xiaomi’s flash sale on Flipkart by keeping the ratio of Registration counts and available handsets to 30:1.

The blogger named Abhay Rana has revealed something unique about the flash sale. He has posted that only 3,000 units were available and 2,657 units were sold out before the starting of flash sale itself. He has shared details on his blog about the Amazon’s Deals API utilized during Yureka flash sale.

Apart from these, the major flaw that we saw in the Yu’s flash sale was the pricing fiasco. Many buyers who still had Yureka in their cart found that the price has shot up from Rs. 8999 to Rs. 12499 on the checkout page.

Some buyers revealed at the time of checkout , Rs. 8,999 price was revealed to feature a Rs. 3,500 discount from the actual list price of Rs. 12,499. Moreover few users have complained that only Rs. 12,499 price tag was visible.

Moreover Amazon later confirmed that the extra 3000 Rs charged will be refundable in few days. Critics for the flash sale of Yureka took over the social media by storm turning thei official hashtag #YuPlayGod into #YuPlayFraud.

Although there were major issues in the maiden flash sale of YU Yureka, but some buyers did log out happily with a successful purchase of the handset. We hope Amazon rectifies these issues in the upcoming lightning deal, scheduled on 22nd January, 2015.

OnePlus founder Carl Pei in the court said that he didn’t found out anything about the exclusive deal between Cyanogen and Micromax before the OnePlus One getting launched in India. However, he noted that they would be working with a Android platform on OnePlus insteadof Cyanogen.

The court has requested for some written statements from Cyanogen and OnePlus which are to be received in two weeks and the next hearing is to be held on January 7th. However, for now the ban on the handset is being lifted as it falls in a completely different segment of handsets than that of Micromax Yureka.
