Russia to Develop Its Own Mobile Operating System

Russia’s Communications Minister, Nikolai Nikiforov has hold meeting with the representatives of Finland company’s Jolla as well as other representatives from Russia’s IT-industry. The purpose for the meeting is to discuss the development of an independent Russian mobile operating system (OS) in order to solve the issue of the leakage of user’s personal data by current major operating systems as claimed by Edward Snowden.

About a year ago, the head of Ministry of Communications has approached the regional director of Apple in Russia, Peter Nielsen and SAP’s CEO, Vyacheslav Orekhov, and requested the two companies to release their product’s source code. The representatives of Apple and SAP declined to comment on this request.

Jolla is a technology company which is built by former Nokia employees and has created Sailfish OS, a Linux-based operating system. The ownership of Jolla includes both Russian and China shareholder. Apart from Russian and China, it seems like there are a few other countries which will join the project, including Brazil, India and South Africa.

Currently, there are about 95 percent of the phones in Russia are running on Android OS or iOS. By the release of the independent OS, hopefully the number will drop to 50 percent by 2025. Apparently, this is not the first time that Russia attempted to create its own operating system. In late 2011, Ministry of Communications has approved the prototype of Russian Windows which is planned to be used by officials and civil servants.

Jolla confirms the split screen feature for its Sailfish tablet

Last month, we told you about Jolla launching a crowd funding campaign on Indiegogo and now the campaign has come to an end successfully with Jolla managing to raise $1,824,055 which is much more than its initial goal of $380,000. The upcoming Jolla tablet would be more enhanced having a split screen feature and an addition of microSD card slot supporting 128GB of additional storage.

Reports show that Jolla also planned to add the 3.5G connectivity feature for additional cost of $30 but that required an total funding of $2.5 million which was not possible. Moreover, the good thing is that all people who have contributed for Jolla’s campaign with $209 and more would get a Jolla Tablet by the May 2015.

Looking to some of its technical specifications, the Jolla Tablet would have a 7.9inch display to its front with 1536×2048 pixel resolution, a 5MP primary camera to its back, 2GB of RAM memory and 32GB of internal memory, a 64-bit quad-core Intel Atom processor clocked at 1.8GHz and a 4300 battery backup. The tablet would be running the Sailfish OS 2.0 which would also allow users to run the Android apps. For more details regarding the tablet, click the source link below.
