Samsung announces first Tizen powered Samsung Z smartphone

A day ahead of the Tizen Developer Conference in San Francisco, Samsung’s long rumored Tizen-powered smartphone is officially a certainty. It’s called the Samsung Z, and in fact, the design has almost nothing to do with Samsung’s Galaxy S series design language. Instead, the company has opted for a particular rectangle shape that’s quite popular in Chinese smartphones. However, Samsung has given it its signature faux leather treatment to differentiate. In terms of colors, the phone will be available in black and gold variants.

The Samsung Z comes with a 4.9-inch, 1280×720 Super AMOLED display, 2.3GHz quad-core processor (probably the Snapdragon 800), 2GB of RAM, 16GB internal memory with microSD card support, 8 megapixel rear camera, 2.1 megapixel front camera, LTE, NFC, IR sensor, 2600mAh battery and version 2.2.1 of Tizen.

Packing itself into this LTE-enabled smartphone is “cutting-edge technology” that brings the same Ultra Power Saving Mode from the Galaxy S5. In addition, present on the Samsung Z is a built-in fingerprint sensor and S Health 3.0. From an app perspective, users will be able to download apps via the Tizen Store when the Samsung Z officially launches.

Samsung Z will run on Tizen home-brewed operating system. It is sort of a reincarnation of the old Meego OS that the Nokia N9 ran on. It’s also the same OS the latest Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 smartwatch runs on.Samsusng promises that Tizen will deliver faster boot times, better multitasking, and faster browsing, among other things.Samsung’s DJ Lee stated, “Samsung is committed to enhancing the mobile experience of consumers with innovation that is both personal and unique to their needs.”

The smartphone will initially launch in Russia in the third quarter of this year. Other countries will follow, but it isn’t known when. The price is still in question, too.
