High Demand of Nexus 9 Forcing HTC to Boost Production Capacity

HTC North Asia President Jack Tong revealed that Nexus 9 has been in high demand until the company needs to expand its production capacity to meet orders. This was announced by Tong during a sideline in the product launch ceremony in Taipei which also showcased HTC Desire Eye and Desire 820.  The earlier product is a selfie-focused smartphone while the latter is a smartphone with dual SIM cards.

With the success of Nexus 7, the high demand for Nexus 9 can be seen as the continuation of the Nexus 7’s success. Based on this result, HTC is even considering promoting its own tablet products. Since the Nexus product line is manufactured with Google and HTC as partners.

Unfortunately the sales of the tablet in the international market have been declining.  HTC will need to observe the market for its reaction to Nexus 9 and then carefully analyze how the company can make a name for itself.

“Product differentiation is a key issue, and we are still thinking about [our strategy],” Tong said.

According to the report by Taipei-based Digitimes Research, the tablet shipments would reach 74.53 million units this quarter which is down 10,1 percent from last year. It cites the reason due to the gradually saturated global market.

With the launches of 5.5-inch and even larger smartphones in the recent period, it affects the sales of 7-inch tablets and HTC may seek to promote higher end tablet models.

In a conference call last week, HTC reported that the revenue for this quarter is reaching NT$43 billion to NT$47 billion which increases 2.71 percent to 12.27 percent from NT$41.86 billion last quarter.
