LG Nexus 5 (2015), next Flagship LG G5 to feature fingerprint scanner and Android Pay

After manufacturing Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 for Google, Korean electronics giant LG is now manufacturing another Nexus device for Google which will be next gen version of the 2013 Nexus 5. Although it is a “refresh” of Nexus 5, it will feature all the top technologies including Android M, Android Pay and a fingerprint scanner.

The Korea Herald reports that LG Nexus 5 (2015) will be the first smartphone from Google to sport the fingerprint recognition technology.  The fingerprint sensor will work with Android M which will offer native biometrics support and consumers will be able to use it for authorization in Google’s new mobile payment system, Android Pay. The report doesn’t mention any other specs except that the LG Nexus 5 (2015) is likely to have a 5.2-inch (13 cm) display.

After the fingerprint recognition technology is tested on Nexus 5 (2015), LG plans to incorporate it in its own future flagships, the next one probably being LG G5 if LG continues with its existing naming system. If an earlier rumor is to be believed, the LG G5 will also sport iris recognition technology. The rumored upcoming LG G Pro may also come with a fingerprint sensor.

Incorporating Fingerprint sensors will help LG to stay in competition against the likes of Apple and Samsung. Apple has the mobile payment system Apple Pay and Samsung is soon rolling out Samsung Pay but unlike both of them, LG will probably adopt Android Pay that will come with Android M.

The Huawei-made 5.7-inch Nexus phablet will also apparently have a fingerprint sensor as its prototype has allegedly appeared in a video showing a fingerprint sensor at the back.

The Korea Herald reports that LG Nexus 5 will be unveiled in October this year. If so, we can expect the release of Android at about the same time because Google is in the habit of launching a new Nexus device with the new version of its Android OS.

Alleged prototype of Huawei Nexus appears in a video, reveals fingerprint sensor on the back

As is rumored since long, two Nexus devices are expected to be launched this year by Google, one of which will be made by Huawei and the other will be the 2015 edition of Nexus 5. A couple of days back we saw some interesting 3D renderings of the Nexus 5 (2015) leaked in a video and now we have a video showing the Huawei Nexus smartphone.

It is a 10-second video posted by Steve Hemmerstoffer of @OnLeaks who has quite a good track record for leaking information about unannounced devices. The alleged Huawei Nexus smartphone in the video has a matte finish but it is difficult to say whether it is plastic or metal. Nexus 5 has a plastic cover. The camera in the leaked Huawei-made device looks similar to the one present in the Nexus 5.

The handset features a fingerprint scanner at the back and the position of buttons on the right side confirms to the Huawei design language. A port is visible at the bottom which may be the USB Type-C port as is rumored.

Leaked specs of the Huawei Nexus smartphone indicate a 5.7-inch QHD AMOLED display, metal unibody, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 and a 21MP rear camera with Sony IMX230 sensor.

Well, it remains to be seen whether this really is the Huawei Nexus Phone. We will know more soon enough as October, the launching time for Nexus devices is just a couple of months away.

Alleged rear cover images of the upcoming LG-made Nexus phone leak

Rumors suggest that Google is planning to launch two new Nexus devices this year, one made by LG and the other by Huawei. It is also rumored that the design of the new LG-made nexus will be totally new and not be based on LG G4 as was believed earlier. It will possibly feature a 3D dual camera and a fingerprint scanner.

Now @OnLeaks has posted some images on twitter showing the rear side of the upcoming LG-made nexus. They are images of the rear cover of the Nexus device and have come from a case manufacturer. It can be seen that the rear side has three cutouts. There are two holes one below the other which could accommodate the rumored dual camera. There is also a rectangular hole by their side where the flash unit of the camera could be placed.

Well, the images are said to be based on some “very early informations” and should be taken with a grain of salt as there may be several changes made to it by the time the final LG-made nexus is announced officially. It is rumored that both LG-made and Huawei-made Nexus devices will be running Android M out-of-the-box and could be launched in October this year.

New Nexus Smartphone by LG Rumored to Come with 3D Dual Camera and Fingerprint Scanner

LG Nexus 5 is rumored to have a 3D camera module. This 3D camera module is achieved by placing two camera at the same location side by side and it is enhanced with infrared light sensors so that it still able to capture pictures with good quality even though they are taken in darkness.

It seems like this kind of technology has been attempted before by Amazon with the product named Amazon Fire Phone. The difference is that the product from Amazon is using 4 cameras while LG Nexus 5 will be using only 2 cameras. Unfortunately, Amazon did not succeed with its product.

The dual camera setting for LG Nexus 5 has been confirmed by LG official. LG has been experimenting with this kind of setting ever since the company released Optimus 3D smartphone from 2011.

If everything goes well, the Google and LG partnership project which goes by the name of “Project Tango” technology will be carried over in the revised version of Nexus 5. Project Tango is designed to enable smartphones and tablets to show the 3D model of the user’s environment via the combination of depth camera, motion tracking camera, RGB camera and also a variety of sensors.

LG Nexus 5 will be announced in October 2015 and will be pre-installed with Android M. On top of that, it is rumored that the smartphone will come with fingerprint scanner.

LG Considering Making Google-Nexus Smartphone for 2015 Nexus

There are a lot of rumors floating around on whether it is going to be Huawei or LG who is going to make the next generation of Nexus for Google. It seems like LG is in consideration of producing Nexus 5. It is given such name as the device is rumored to come with a 5.2 inch screen display.

Last year, LG was concentrating on producing its own flagship smartphone and the company has since launched LG G3 which is inside of many best Android phone lists. The next generation of smartphone which is manufactured by LG is expected to have a better performance than LG G3, however, it is not the case. LG G Flex 2 which runs on Snapdragon 810 is not performing as per expected as the processor itself has battery issues and a few other issues which in the end affecting its performance.

Fortunately, LG decided not to use Snapdragon 810 for LG G4. By using LG G4 as the blueprint for the next Nexus, it seems like it is going to be benefitted from the next generation of Qualcomm processor, Snapdragon 820 or 815 which is expected to fix the battery issues and some other performance issue which exists in Qualcomm Snapdragon 810.

On top of that the next Nexus will offer an impressive Nexus camera experience as pledged by Google. As per previous year, the next gen of Nexus will be launched in the Q4 timeslot. We cannot wait to try it.

Next Nexus Handset Rumored to be built by Huawei

There are a few rumors regarding the release of Nexus smartphone for 2015 originating from China. It seems like Google has shortlisted 2 companies to manufacture Nexus smartphone and both of them will be released this year. One of the companies is Huawei and the other will be LG. Previously, Nexus 6 was manufactured by Motorola.

One issue with Nexus 6 is its size. Nexus 6 looks more like phablets and it seems like there was not many customer who was looking for phablet during that period. Therefore, Google decided to keep the 2013 Nexus 5 around. According to Android Police’s Artem Russakovskii on a blog which he wrote on Google+, with confirmation from a trusted source, he mentioned that Huawei is working on Nexus smartphone which is going to have a 5.7-inch screen size whereas LG will make a smaller Nexus handset this year which is of 5.2-inch screen size.

The specifications for Huawei Nexus which is published on Weibo site belonging to a Chinese IT analyst firm, Pan Jiutang, it is rumored that Huawei Nexus will feature Samsung built 5.7-inch OLED display with resolution of 1440 x 2560. Huawei’s own product itself for the high-end models will be made of Hi-Silicon Kirin chipsets, whereas, Huawei Nexus will be equipped with Snapdragon 810 SoC. Thus, there is no doubt that this decision is coming from Google itself.

There are other Nexus handset manufacturers, for example, HTC for Nexus One and Samsung for Samsung Nexus S or Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

Android 5.1 Lollipop update released for Android One devices

Google has quietly released Android 5.1 lollipop update without making any formal announcement. This update was released for Android One, Google’s initiative to offer Android experience to budget smartphones in developing markets. Android One is very close to stock Android without any modifications applied by vendors.

Google has released an updated version, Android 5.1 Lollipop for Android One, which offers some minor changes over the Android 5.0.2 release for Nexus smartphones and tablets. One of the useful change is included in the Android Lollipop ‘Quick Settings’ menu. Google has tweaked the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi toggles so that switching between the two wireless connections becomes easy. While Android 5.0 users can toggle on/off Bluetooth menu with just a tap and access the full menu for both with a tap below, in Android 5.1 a tap on the toggle label will open up the whole list of connections without having to leave the quick settings menu. Users just have to tap the connection they want, without the need to open the full settings menu.

Other improvements in the new Android 5.1 update include improved system stability, RAM management and battery management; addition of true silent mode; changes in the Material Design color palette as well as certain other bug fixes and performance enhancements. We hope Android 5.1 update has got rid of many problems found in the earlier Lollipop version giving users a faster and smoother Android experience.

The latest version released publicly for Android Lollipop is 5.0.2, while the Android 5.1 version has been released for Android One devices. It is speculated that Google has been testing this latest update on Nexus devices and that the Nexus line-up might get Android 5.1 soon.

Android 5.0 Lollipop Flashlight Bug Pestering Nexus Devices

Apparently, the new update for Android 5.0 Lollipop was welcomed with unfavourable reports, mainly concerning Nexus devices and its flashlight and camera app. Although it was not confirmed yet when the update would be completely revealed, testimonies have already come up that Android 5.0 Lollipop flashlight bug has come up. This is not very surprising since we are taking in a major OS update though.

flashlight bug3     flashlight bug4

Nexus 5 users are mostly affected by this and several of them have proven this to be true. The thing is if you turned on the flashlight, which automatically turns off after a few minutes, the flashlight and the camera app stop functioning. And would only start working again after a reboot, which would be very inconvenient for anyone.

The bug is said to also affect the Nexus 4 although not in the same way and extent. With Nexus 4, the flashlight does not automatically turns off; however, it triggers the camera to stop operating after a few minutes. But the good thing here is that there is no need for a reboot. And I am sure many of you heaved a sigh of relief. Opening it from the lock screen would do the trick!

High Demand of Nexus 9 Forcing HTC to Boost Production Capacity

HTC North Asia President Jack Tong revealed that Nexus 9 has been in high demand until the company needs to expand its production capacity to meet orders. This was announced by Tong during a sideline in the product launch ceremony in Taipei which also showcased HTC Desire Eye and Desire 820.  The earlier product is a selfie-focused smartphone while the latter is a smartphone with dual SIM cards.

With the success of Nexus 7, the high demand for Nexus 9 can be seen as the continuation of the Nexus 7’s success. Based on this result, HTC is even considering promoting its own tablet products. Since the Nexus product line is manufactured with Google and HTC as partners.

Unfortunately the sales of the tablet in the international market have been declining.  HTC will need to observe the market for its reaction to Nexus 9 and then carefully analyze how the company can make a name for itself.

“Product differentiation is a key issue, and we are still thinking about [our strategy],” Tong said.

According to the report by Taipei-based Digitimes Research, the tablet shipments would reach 74.53 million units this quarter which is down 10,1 percent from last year. It cites the reason due to the gradually saturated global market.

With the launches of 5.5-inch and even larger smartphones in the recent period, it affects the sales of 7-inch tablets and HTC may seek to promote higher end tablet models.

In a conference call last week, HTC reported that the revenue for this quarter is reaching NT$43 billion to NT$47 billion which increases 2.71 percent to 12.27 percent from NT$41.86 billion last quarter.

Nexus 9 Keyboard Made Interesting with Dedicated Buttons for Emoji and Home Keys

Nexus 9 will be up for grabs via pre-order this Friday. But there is one more interesting thing the brand is brewing. The new Nexus 9 Keyboard, although there are no details released yet regarding its pricing and availability, has already captured worldwide attention.

The Nexus 9 folio keyboard is somehow a hybrid of iPad Smart Cover and Microsoft Type Cover. It features both a magnetic bendable keyboard, a well-known characteristic of the iPad Smart Cover, as well as it is a keyboard with plastic keys, a famous attribute of the latter. But the thing is apart from these, basing on the images of the Nexus 9 Keyboard that are already out, it might be featuring shortcut buttons for emoji and the Home key.

As you can see, the Alt keys might also function as emoji key and the Ctrl key can dual purpose as the Home key. You might be thinking it is not very significant. But if you come to think of it, this new aspect can make way to more keyboard shortcuts in the future to open particular apps. Having dedicated apps for several applications can certainly improve user experience.

So, whether or not you are fond of using emojis, this feature of the upcoming Nexus 9 Keyboard would be helpful!
