LG Nexus 5 (2015), next Flagship LG G5 to feature fingerprint scanner and Android Pay

After manufacturing Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 for Google, Korean electronics giant LG is now manufacturing another Nexus device for Google which will be next gen version of the 2013 Nexus 5. Although it is a “refresh” of Nexus 5, it will feature all the top technologies including Android M, Android Pay and a fingerprint scanner.

The Korea Herald reports that LG Nexus 5 (2015) will be the first smartphone from Google to sport the fingerprint recognition technology.  The fingerprint sensor will work with Android M which will offer native biometrics support and consumers will be able to use it for authorization in Google’s new mobile payment system, Android Pay. The report doesn’t mention any other specs except that the LG Nexus 5 (2015) is likely to have a 5.2-inch (13 cm) display.

After the fingerprint recognition technology is tested on Nexus 5 (2015), LG plans to incorporate it in its own future flagships, the next one probably being LG G5 if LG continues with its existing naming system. If an earlier rumor is to be believed, the LG G5 will also sport iris recognition technology. The rumored upcoming LG G Pro may also come with a fingerprint sensor.

Incorporating Fingerprint sensors will help LG to stay in competition against the likes of Apple and Samsung. Apple has the mobile payment system Apple Pay and Samsung is soon rolling out Samsung Pay but unlike both of them, LG will probably adopt Android Pay that will come with Android M.

The Huawei-made 5.7-inch Nexus phablet will also apparently have a fingerprint sensor as its prototype has allegedly appeared in a video showing a fingerprint sensor at the back.

The Korea Herald reports that LG Nexus 5 will be unveiled in October this year. If so, we can expect the release of Android at about the same time because Google is in the habit of launching a new Nexus device with the new version of its Android OS.

Alleged rear cover images of the upcoming LG-made Nexus phone leak

Rumors suggest that Google is planning to launch two new Nexus devices this year, one made by LG and the other by Huawei. It is also rumored that the design of the new LG-made nexus will be totally new and not be based on LG G4 as was believed earlier. It will possibly feature a 3D dual camera and a fingerprint scanner.

Rear-cover-LG-made-Nexus

Now @OnLeaks has posted some images on twitter showing the rear side of the upcoming LG-made nexus. They are images of the rear cover of the Nexus device and have come from a case manufacturer. It can be seen that the rear side has three cutouts. There are two holes one below the other which could accommodate the rumored dual camera. There is also a rectangular hole by their side where the flash unit of the camera could be placed.

Well, the images are said to be based on some “very early informations” and should be taken with a grain of salt as there may be several changes made to it by the time the final LG-made nexus is announced officially. It is rumored that both LG-made and Huawei-made Nexus devices will be running Android M out-of-the-box and could be launched in October this year.

LG develops tiny hexagonal battery for smartwatches with 25% more battery life

Most smartwatches have a problem of low battery life because the batteries powering them are so small. Even with light usage they last for a day with difficulty. Luckily, LG’s chemical engineering arm LG Chem has come out with a solution to this problem. They have developed tiny hexagonal battery which has more capacity and offers an improved battery life.

This hexagonal battery has been developed specifically for smartwatches and its hexagonal shape is ideal for circular displays. LG Chem has already started shipping these batteries to global smartwatch manufacturers. The company says that these hexagonal batteries offer 25% more storage capacity compared to the traditionally used batteries. According to the company, more IT firms will be introducing smartwatches with round displays in the second half of the year.

LG Chem-Hexagonal Battery-2

Woo Byeong-Min, spokesman for LG Chem told The Korea Times, “LG Chem has started selling hexagonal batteries to global tech firms. The batteries, manufactured in Nanjing, China, where LG operates massive battery factories, will be used in upcoming smart watches.”

Mr. Woo said that the hexagonal battery was the first such battery in the industry and has been developed in collaboration with a top technology company though he declined to reveal its name. Although he did say that it was not Apple or LG Electronics.

He also claimed that this battery adds four hours to the battery life and these batteries will also be used in circular smartwatches which the company plans to launch in future. LG also plans to launch batteries in different shapes for other devices such as an L-shaped battery or a rectangular one with a hole in the center.

LG Chem plans to become the top global supplier of tiny batteries by 2018.

LG Coming Up with Its Lightest Micro LED Projector

LG is launching Minibeam Nano. It is a mobile projector weighing at only 270 grams (9.5 oz) which approximately the same weight as an average paperback book. The actual size of the projector is 108mm wide, 103mm long and 44mm deep (4.25 x 4.06 x 1.73 inches). It is so light and small enough to be put inside the bag with minimal effort.

This feature has a lot of usage. One of them is for doing presentation in your client’s office. Therefore, you do not need to depend whether your client have those conventional projector which normally attached to the ceiling to do your product or service presentation.  On top of that, you also do not have to worry that your client cannot see the slides, which you have prepared, clearly as they need to see them in your small laptop screen while you are doing your presentation.

To keep it portable, the mini projector has a 3800 mAh battery size which is enough to run for about 2 hours on a charge. This kind of battery life size is enough to watch an average movie. When you are running out of battery, you can plug it to the power source to recharge. It is using a 100-240V AC-DC adapter.

The projector has native resolution of 854 x 480 with 16:9 aspect ratios. It is capable for projecting 100 ANSI lumen image up to 100 inches (2.54 metres) with a 1.64 throw ratio. There is a built in 1W mono speaker which is convenient enough but not as good as the normal speaker.

There are a few options for playing the media. You can connect it to a smartphone, tablet or PC with using Wi-Fi. By using this way, the image which is projected by using the projector display will also be available on your device screen. On top of that, there is also USB port and an option to use HDMI port to connect to other external device.

LG Minibeam Nano will be available in North America, Asia, Europe, Africa/Middle East and Latin America for $349.99.

New Nexus Smartphone by LG Rumored to Come with 3D Dual Camera and Fingerprint Scanner

LG Nexus 5 is rumored to have a 3D camera module. This 3D camera module is achieved by placing two camera at the same location side by side and it is enhanced with infrared light sensors so that it still able to capture pictures with good quality even though they are taken in darkness.

It seems like this kind of technology has been attempted before by Amazon with the product named Amazon Fire Phone. The difference is that the product from Amazon is using 4 cameras while LG Nexus 5 will be using only 2 cameras. Unfortunately, Amazon did not succeed with its product.

The dual camera setting for LG Nexus 5 has been confirmed by LG official. LG has been experimenting with this kind of setting ever since the company released Optimus 3D smartphone from 2011.

If everything goes well, the Google and LG partnership project which goes by the name of “Project Tango” technology will be carried over in the revised version of Nexus 5. Project Tango is designed to enable smartphones and tablets to show the 3D model of the user’s environment via the combination of depth camera, motion tracking camera, RGB camera and also a variety of sensors.

LG Nexus 5 will be announced in October 2015 and will be pre-installed with Android M. On top of that, it is rumored that the smartphone will come with fingerprint scanner.

LG Rumored Working on Iris Scanning Security for the next G5 Smartphone

For the next LG’s flagship smartphone for next year, the Korean technology company is reported to be working on security technology which uses your iris to decide whether you are an authorized person or not. To achieve this, LG has been working with the Korean-based biometrics firm Irience for the integration with the smartphone which goes by the name of G5. If everything goes as per scheduled, the G5 will be released in the first half of 2016.

It is reported that Irience had completed the hardware module which is going to be embedded into G5 and now is polishing the algorithms to increase the recognition range from 12in(30cm) to 20in(50cm).

Iris scanning is no doubt the most secure way for authorization nowadays compared to the fingerprint scanning. The only challenge now is to make it work as effortlessly as possible with the Apple’s or Samsung’s technology under whatever tricky environments. For example, it should be able to recognize the iris in the shortest possible time to authorize a payment in the busy market.

LG has always been coming out with different smartphone design and functionality with the others smartphone manufacturers. Apparently, LG is not the only company which is experimenting with the iris scanning security technology, other manufacturers such as Apple and Samsung also reported to have been working on this technology to make it consumer ready.

Google to launch 2 Nexus devices this year, a phablet by Huawei and a smartphone by LG

Google will apparently launch two new Nexus devices in 2015 – a phablet manufactured by Huawei and a smartphone made by LG. However, Google doesn’t seem to have any plan for releasing a new Nexus Tablet.

Several rumors have been floating around since the last few months regarding who will be manufacturing the next Nexus device for Google and most claimed that it would be a Chinese company. Some rumors suggested it would be Huawei, while others claimed it could be LG. One rumor did say that this year, Google will be releasing two Nexus devices and the two companies manufacturing them would be Huawei and LG. Well, it looks like this rumor may be true after all.

The Huawei-made Nexus device would be a 5.7” phablet codenamed ‘Angler’.  This will be a successor to the Nexus 6 but slightly smaller. According to reports, phablet Angler will have a Snapdragon 810 chipset and a 3500mAh battery.

The Nexus smartphone manufactured by LG will be a 5.2 inch affair codenamed ‘Bullhead’. Sources say that LG is planning the same hexa-core chipset Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 which it has used in LG G4. The Bullhead will have a battery with capacity of around 2700mAh but it hasn’t been finalized yet. This will be the third Nexus device manufactured by LG for Google after Nexus 4 and Nexus 5.

Both the Nexus devices would be released by Google as usual around October this year. As far as Nexus tablets are concerned, it is said that Google will continue to sell Nexus 9 this year too as no new Nexus tablet seems to be in the works.

Lack of Innovation in Android Smartphones Manufacturers

It seems like there is lesser things to look forward from Android-based smartphone. Most of the newly launched smartphone running on Android are having more or less the same feature as the previous version. When we talk about innovation, it means the idea which is out of the box and meant to revolutionized the device be it hardware or software.

Lets us take a look at Samsung. Recently, Samsung has just released two new smartphones which are Android based, Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. Instead of adding new functionality to the device while keeping the rest the same, Samsung has revamped the design of Galaxy models for the two new models. It is no surprise that the company aims for 70 million plus global sales. However, the two models do not have microSD slot as well as removable battery which is seen as a small sacrifice.

HTC One M9, another smartphone which is running on Android has the same design as the previous model with small updates here and there. Sony is releasing Xperia Z4 soon. Apparently Xperia Z4 will have the same design as Xperia Z3 but with enhanced processor. Huawei which is going to release the new P8 comes with a slimmer body, updated camera, better display, longer lasting battery life and new processor. It seems like Huawei is doing a lot more than the other two smartphone manufacturer.

LG has made headlines with its LG G3 which was released last year as it comes with a Quad HD display. This year, eventhough it is not confirmed yet, LG is going to launch G4 which comes with tweaked display, bigger battery and new design options.

Above are some of Android smartphone manufacturers which its name is popular in the industry. It seems like it is reasonable to just release one new model each year while looking for other innovative ideas to be implemented in the device.

LG Considering Making Google-Nexus Smartphone for 2015 Nexus

There are a lot of rumors floating around on whether it is going to be Huawei or LG who is going to make the next generation of Nexus for Google. It seems like LG is in consideration of producing Nexus 5. It is given such name as the device is rumored to come with a 5.2 inch screen display.

Last year, LG was concentrating on producing its own flagship smartphone and the company has since launched LG G3 which is inside of many best Android phone lists. The next generation of smartphone which is manufactured by LG is expected to have a better performance than LG G3, however, it is not the case. LG G Flex 2 which runs on Snapdragon 810 is not performing as per expected as the processor itself has battery issues and a few other issues which in the end affecting its performance.

Fortunately, LG decided not to use Snapdragon 810 for LG G4. By using LG G4 as the blueprint for the next Nexus, it seems like it is going to be benefitted from the next generation of Qualcomm processor, Snapdragon 820 or 815 which is expected to fix the battery issues and some other performance issue which exists in Qualcomm Snapdragon 810.

On top of that the next Nexus will offer an impressive Nexus camera experience as pledged by Google. As per previous year, the next gen of Nexus will be launched in the Q4 timeslot. We cannot wait to try it.

The LG G4c would feature a 5-inch IPS LCD display with 1280 x 720 pixels (294 ppi) resolution and would be powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 chipset clocked at 1.2GHz, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage with microSD slot for expansion. It will have an 8MP rear camera with LED flash and autofocus at the back and a 5MP selfie camera in the front. LG- Google team up to give LG G4 users 115GB of free cloud storage on Google Drive

LG has just announced its new flagship smartphone, the 5.5-inch LG G4 with leather back and it is set to give tough competition to Samsung’s latest flagship Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge.

Now, Samsung has partnered with Microsoft to bring Microsoft services and apps to its Android phones Galaxy S6 and S6 edge which also includes OneDrive among others. Since Google’s partners have to include the entire suit of Google apps in their phones, Google’s Drive got competition from OneDrive in these Samsung phones from the word go.

The Samsung-Microsoft deal also includes 100GB of extra free cloud storage space to Galaxy S6 and S6 edge users on OneDrive for a period of 2 years, which takes the total free storage space to 115GB. Not to lag behind, Google has partnered with LG to provide the exact same 115GB free storage space on Google Drive on it’s recently announced LG G4 smartphone.

Google already gives Android users 15GB of storage on Google Drive and now LG G4 owners are going to get additional 100GB making it 115GB of free storage space. This was announced when LG’s officials were giving details about the new flagship.

Companies making Android phones are greatly dependent on Google for the Android OS and have to be a part of all partnership programs which Google wants. It is no secret that Samsung wants more control over its Android smartphones than what Google is prepared to give. Perhaps its deal with Microsoft is sort of a rebellion against Google’s authority. Not to be left behind, Google has taken the opportunity offered by LG to advance its agenda too.

Apple to launch iMac with 8K resolution later this year says partner LG

Well, who would have thought that 8K displays would be available for purchase as early as this year. In its press release a few days back, LG announced it is working on a 4320p super resolution display – the “next-generation of high-resolution 8K”.  It gave details about this super display and about its partnership with Apple among others.

Usually, Apple keeps its plans secret but LG Display has inadvertently leaked this information while mentioning its own 8K 98-inch (7680 x 4320 pixels) Ultra HDTV that the Korean giant had showcased at this year’s CES show.

The LG press release says, “Apple has also announced that they will release the ‘iMac 8K’ with a super-high resolution display later this year.” However, Apple hasn’t announced any such plans about a new iMac with 8K display in the near future.

Apple-LG-8K

Apple released a 27-inch retina iMac with a retina 5K super resolution display last year, having 14.7 million pixels (5120 x 2880 pixels), 4 times more than the standard 27-inch iMac. So developing an 8K iMac doesn’t seem impossible for the Cupertino giant but upgrading the iMac so quickly to such high resolution does seem a bit unusual. And for LG to out Apple’s future product plans is even more unusual. Of course, it might have been a mistake and LG has since then taken down the post.

Earlier in the month, LG had announced that it would introduce its new Watch Urbane at the MWC and also gave us a glimpse of the Suave, elegant watch through a promo video a few days back. All this time LG had an LTE variant of the Watch Urbane up its sleeve which it has disclosed now. Watch Urbane LTE is the world’s first smartwatch with LTE support and it will also debut at the MWC 2015 early next month in Barcelona.

Watch Urbane LTE has many upgraded features compared to Watch Urbane. It allows you to make LTE phone calls directly from it without needing a smartphone. The battery also gets a jump from 410 mAh to 700 mAh, offering the longest battery life compared to any other smartwatch currently in the market. The display turns off automatically when you take off the watch saving battery life. The watch has three control buttons on the right side instead of only one in its predecessor. These buttons help in speedy navigation and quick settings.

Another interesting fact is that Watch Urbane LTE will not be running Android Wear but will run LG’s own proprietary OS that will be compatible with all smartphones running Android 4.4 and above.

As for specs, the watch features the same 1.3-inch P-OLED display with 320×320 pixels resolution and 245ppi pixel density, a 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 CPU, 4GB of internal storage and dust and water resistance with IP67 certification, but the RAM has been bumped from 512 MB to 1 GB.

LG is Working on A New Processor Equivalent to Snapdragon 810

Apparently nowadays smartphone manufacturers are developing their own processor for their latest smartphone models. Samsung’s Exynos processor has been powering up Samsung smartphone from Samsung S3 onward.  LG on the other hand, is not doing well with their chipset development. Its first chipset, NUCLUN which is embedded into LG G3 screen is having overheating issue. This resulted in the low sales of the device. It is also most probably one of the reason on why we will not see any new LG device which is powered by NUCLUN in the market anytime soon.

However, this did not dampen LG’s spirit to develop another chipset which is of Snapdragon 810 equivalent. There is not many information about this chipset, it was supposed to feature 4x Cortex-A57 cores alongside a Cortex-A53 quad-core unit. Unfortunately, it was also cancelled due to technical issue which led to overheating.

Recently, there are rumors that LG is working on the third chipset. The SoC will apparently use 4 Cortex-A72 cores which has the codename “Maya” and an additional 4 Cortex-A53 cores. According to the rumors, the CPU will be accompanied by an unspecified Mali graphics chip, but given the presence of a Cortex-A72 processor it is expected that the GPU will be a next-gen Mali-T880. The CPU will apparently be built by TSMC on a 20nm process.

There is no further information on the release date, however, the CPU was apparently pushed back 6 months. We assumed that the chipset will only be ready at the end of the year.
