Everdisplay unveils world’s first 6-inch 4K AMOLED Display with 734ppi

Think of a 4K 3840 x 2160 pixel display with a pixel density of 734ppi for your 6-inch smartphone. Seems a bit of overkill? Well, a Chinese company Everdisplay has announced the development of such a screen.

The AMOLED panel maker Everdisplay aka Hehui Optoelectronics (its Chinese name) has developed the world’s first 4K UHD 6-inch diagonal AMOLED display panel with a whopping 734ppi pixel density. A working prototype of such record breaking featured panel has been unveiled by the company in China. According to Everdisplay, such high-resolution display panels will be required for emerging new applications including virtual reality.

The company had started mass production of 5” 720p AMOLED displays in late 2014. It is also developing various other display panels such as 5.5” and 6” ones for smartphones, 1.4” 400 x 400 round AMOLED ones for smartwatches and also an 8” AMOLED panel for the Automobile sector.

Although a display panel with 734ppi is quite high compared to what is currently used, there are other companies who have developed display prototypes with higher ppis. The highest density display in the world in production is made by Sharp which is the 5.5” (2160 x 3840) 4K IGZO LCD display with 806ppi. SEL of Japan has developed a 2.8” panel prototype with 2560 x 1440 resolution achieving a ppi of 1058!

In AMOLED displays, the current record is held by Samsung Galaxy S6 which has a 5.1”QHD 577ppi super AMOLED panel. Last month, Samsung announced that it was planning to develop super-high 11K mobile displays with a pixel density of 2250ppi!

As for the 6-inch (3840 x 2160) 4K 734ppi display, Everdisplay has not disclosed when it will enter mass production.

Apple to launch iMac with 8K resolution later this year says partner LG

Well, who would have thought that 8K displays would be available for purchase as early as this year. In its press release a few days back, LG announced it is working on a 4320p super resolution display – the “next-generation of high-resolution 8K”.  It gave details about this super display and about its partnership with Apple among others.

Usually, Apple keeps its plans secret but LG Display has inadvertently leaked this information while mentioning its own 8K 98-inch (7680 x 4320 pixels) Ultra HDTV that the Korean giant had showcased at this year’s CES show.

The LG press release says, “Apple has also announced that they will release the ‘iMac 8K’ with a super-high resolution display later this year.” However, Apple hasn’t announced any such plans about a new iMac with 8K display in the near future.

Apple released a 27-inch retina iMac with a retina 5K super resolution display last year, having 14.7 million pixels (5120 x 2880 pixels), 4 times more than the standard 27-inch iMac. So developing an 8K iMac doesn’t seem impossible for the Cupertino giant but upgrading the iMac so quickly to such high resolution does seem a bit unusual. And for LG to out Apple’s future product plans is even more unusual. Of course, it might have been a mistake and LG has since then taken down the post.

Apple Rumors: Upcoming iPhone 6S Plus to feature Force Touch display

We have already heard rumors that after bringing Force Touch display to Apple Watch, Apple is working to provide the Force Touch feature to its next iPhone.  The rumors have surfaced again, this time from the supplier who has provided the Force Touch panels for Apple Watch.

The supplier is TPK from China and according to a report by UDN, industry insiders say that TPK is set to record a significant growth in profits in the second half of this year because it is supplying Force Touch sensors to Apple along with GIS, another China-based supplier. These new sensors are meant for iPhone 6S Plus.

Force Touch display has a sensor embedded inside it which can distinguish between a light tap and a hard press on the screen by the user. This is a whole new functionality found in the Apple Watch and in the trackpad of the new Macbook. Now it looks like Apple’s upcoming iPhone 6S Plus will be getting it too.

Since the Apple Watch’s Force Touch display is smaller at 1.5-inch and 1.65-inch, it costs around $4 to $5 per unit. In comparison, the iPhone 6S Plus will have a much larger 5.5-inch display and the Force Touch sensor for it will cost about $13 to $14 which is 2.5 times that of the Apple Watch.

The interesting point to note is that iPhone 6S doesn’t seem to be getting the Force Touch display, only it’s bigger counterpart, the iPhone 6S Plus will feature it.

LG’s new 34-inch 21:9 UltraWide Curved 4K displays headed for CES 2015

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas this month is going to see a lot of new innovative products showcased by a multitude of companies. LG too is preparing for the show with some 4K Ultra HD TVs and UltraWide monitors. The South Korean electronics giant plans to introduce world’s first 21:9 UltraWide displays with AMD FreeSync technology at the CES in Vegas.

The new LG UltraWide monitor lineup is specifically targeted at gamers, graphic designers, photographers, financial business persons and media professionals.

Let’s have a look at them:

Model LG 34UM67

This is LG’s first 21:9 gaming monitor offering a wide 34-inch view and is specifically designed for graphic-intensive gaming. It uses the AMD FreeSync technology that removes screen tearing, thus offering a smooth gaming experience with fluid motion.

Corporate Vice President of ISV/IHV Partner Group of AMD, Roy Taylor says:

“AMD FreeSync technology is an innovative monitor technology, based on free and open industry standards, to eliminate the tearing and stuttering that has plagued PC gaming for 30 years. We are pleased that LG Electronics stands with us with truly exciting AMD FreeSync-ready displays like the LG UltraWide Gaming Monitor.“

The wide field of view helps gamers to see even those spaces that remain hidden in regular 16:9 monitors. Dark scenes in a game are illuminated by the Black Stabilizer of the monitor enabling the gamer to see hidden objects and enemies clearly. It also has a Dynamic Action Sync mode for realtime gameplay experience.

Popular games supporting 21:9 resolution screen are World of Warcraft, Battlefield 4 and ArcheAge and many more games supporting this display are expected to be developed in future.

Model LG 34UC97

This monitor is touted as the”First curved 34-inch 21:9 Monitor” and sports a curved Quad HD display having a resolution of 3340 x 1440 pixels. The monitor is designed for graphic designers and photographers offering them a large screen to look at more number of thumbnails or longer video sequences.

The monitor has a 178⁰ viewing angle and it’s In-Plane Switching (IPS) display gives 99% sRGB color space coverage. It’s compatibility with Thunderbolt 2 will appeal to Mac users.

Model LG 34UC87M

This monitor too has a curved display with aspect ratio of 21:9. It boasts of multi-display setup options and is designed for financial professionals and stock traders. It can work as a trading station or a dashboard to display charts, quotations, orders etc. on different screens, helping to increase the productivity.

Model LG 31MU97

It is a Digital Cinema 4K monitor having 4K resolution of 4096 x 2160p which is higher than the normal UHD 3840 x 2160p resolution. This monitor is also suitable for Digital Intermediate (DI) processes and offers high color accuracy due to its 99.5% coverage of Adobe Color Space. This monitor is meant for photographers and video editors.

As In-kyu Lee, senior vice president and head of LG’s TV and monitor division puts it:

“LG’s premium 21:9 UltraWide monitors are designed with the unique needs of consumers in mind. The industry has come a long way from the days when one display design was thought to be suitable for all users. With the amount of time we spend in front of monitors, there’s a lot of room for specialized monitors in our lives.”

LG will showcase these four monitors at CES 2015 from January 6 to 9 in Vegas.  However, pricing for these four monitors is not known yet.

Samsung Making 9"to 5" Foldable Display Devices for 2015

More news on Samsung’s secret new foldable display device is quickly spreading as a Korean website elaborated on what Samsung seems to be planning for the near future. It is said that Samsung has been showing this technology to prospective investors behind closed doors in CES and MWC expos. This concept device is in the process of becoming a commercial product.

The Korean publication says that the device will be like a tablet, and it will have a 8 to 9 inches Full HD Super AMOLED display. The fact that its a foldable display is whats special about this product. According to the source, the display will have a plastic surface instead of glass, and it will be a touch display. It can be folded in two places at once, making it compact and easy to store in a handbag or a large pocket.

The real challenge when making such a product is to make a display that has good enough image quality and durability. It shouldn’t break even after thousands of folding attempts, and Samsung seems to have done just that. This device is also similar to a tri-foldable patent filed by Samsung not too long ago.

The people at Samsung have been thinking about common uses for this product. Its a product that can be easily folded and carried in a handbag. The people at Samsung also realize that a new interface may be needed as well as apps that can take full advantage of this device. These new apps will probably respond to the product being folded. Samsung plans to announce the device early next year.

Samsung is Apple’s top Display Supplier- Reports

Samsung and Apple seem to be fighting on Patents, however the Asian giant still supplies the largest number of displays to Apple.

Market research firm DisplaySearch has produced a new report via CNET and ZNET Korea. According to this report, Samsung supplied 5.2 million units of high-resolution 9.7-inch panels, which are used in the two famous apple devices. iPad air and 4^th generation iPad are the two devices by apple that will use the display panels by Samsung.

It is important to note that Samsung and Apple are in the news regularly because of their rivalry and complaints over infringement. That is why apple is expected to have generated a lack of trust in Samsung because of these continuous reports of tension between the two giants. However, the technological advancement of Samsung has bagged it the place of biggest supplier of display panels for Apple.

The percentage of total panels shipped to apple by Samsung is said to be 62%. On the other hand, a long time partner of Apple, LG, has shipped 38% of the panels to the company. It is also been stated that apple turned its attention towards Samsung for its displays of Retina iPad mini because of the low yields problem faced by LG displays. 

Apple and Samsung are now the two biggest competitors in the market, but still we do not expect Apple to cut back on its purchases of Display panels from Samsung. Therefore, we can expect them to continue this partnership in the future until Apple finds an alternative for Samsung’s technology and production capacity.
