SanDisk, Toshiba announce high-capacity 256Gb 3D NAND memory chip, may find a place in iPhone 7

Toshiba and its partner SanDisk have unveiled a 256 gigabit (32GB) X3 48-layer 3D NAND flash memory chips. The two memory manufacturers have already started pilot production of these 256 Gb flash chips in their fabrication plant in Yokkaichi, Japan and sample shipments will begin in September this year. This will be the first such 256Gb, 48-Layer BiCS Flash in the world.

In March this year, the two companies had unveiled their first 48-layer 3D V-NAND flash chips that had a capacity of 128 Gb or 16GB. The new 256Gb flash chip uses the 3-bit-per-cell TLC (triple-level cell) technology and is based on the cutting-edge 48-layer stacking process that greatly enhances the capacity, reliability, endurance and speed. The new chip can be used in various applications such as smartphones, tablets, memory cards, consumer SSD and enterprise SSD for data centers.

“This is the world’s first 256Gb X3 chip, developed using our industry-leading 48-layer BiCS technology and demonstrating SanDisk’s continued leadership in X3 technology,” said Siva Sivaram, SanDisk’s executive VP for memory technology in a statement. “We will use this chip to deliver compelling storage solutions for our customers”.

Toshiba and Sandisk have provided flash memory for iPhone 6 among others and the arrival of Cupertino giant’s iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s plus is still about a month away. Although the press release doesn’t mention any clients, the development of this new high-speed high-performance 256Gb flash memory could be good news for the next gen iPhone 7. The 3D BiCS (Bit Cost Scaling) Flash memory will provide more reliability in writing and erasing data compared to the traditional 2D memory. The writing speed will also be vastly improved and will be ideal for devices like the iPhone 7.

Mass production of the 256Gb BiCS Flash will be carried out in Toshiba’s new Fab 2 at Yokkaichi production site and will be commercially available sometime in 2016.

Alleged photos of Apple iPhone 6s display emerge depicting Force Touch implementation

Photos and some specs of the next upcoming iPhone, the iPhone 6s have been circulating for quite some time. iPhone 6s is said to be coming with the Force Touch feature where users can interact with the screen differently by using varied pressure. This feature is currently used in Apple Watch.

A set of photographs have been posted on Chinese repair firm GeekBar’s Weibo account showing the front and back sides of a display unit allegedly belonging to the next iPhone iteration, the iPhone 6s. There are no significant changes to the outside of the unit compared to the current iPhone 6 handsets. The new photos show the same general shape with similar rounded glass edges and the same positioning of ear speaker and camera as well.

Apple-iPhone 6s-display unit-1

The backside of the alleged iPhone 6s display unit is covered by a metal shield obscuring the LCD module and some of the other features but some changes are apparent. One change that catches the eye immediately is the rectangular cutout present on the top left side of the screen. Some component is seen sticking out through it but can’t be identified due to the poor quality of the image. Considering its relative position to the expected layout of the handset’s logic board and battery, it is speculated that the component could be the grounding insert.

Apple-iPhone 6s-display unit-2

Another big change seen is that Apple seems to have discarded the usual screws and clips as the shielding of the display unit shows riveting on all the four sides. It is speculated that the black dots seen on all the sides could have something to do with the Force Touch technology Apple is supposed to be using on the new iPhone 6s. The rivet fixing could compensate for the heavier touch. With Touch Force, user’s regular touch and heavy touch will trigger different actions on the iPhone.

It is said that manufacturing of components for the Force Touch feature has begun. iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus are expected to be launched at a special event by Apple next month.

Apple iPad Air 3 and iPad Mini 4 Details Leaked from Japan

Nowadays, it seems that lesser and lesser users are buying tablets as the smartphones screen are getting bigger and everything that a tablet can do, the smartphone can do it. Apple is trying to prove that wrong. Recently there is leaked information about the upcoming 12.9-inch iPad Pro/Plus from Apple which is coming from Japan.

According to this leaked information, the upcoming tablet from Apple, which most probably going to be called iPad Mini 4 will have more enhanced specifications such as 8MP main camera which can produce a better quality of pictures compared to the older versions of iPad, a thinner body at 6.1mm as well as the display screen which works better under the sunlight.

On top of that, the leaked information also mentioned that Apple is going to release another product which looks like an updated iPad Air 3 in the near future. However, there is not much details on the product leaked except that it is most probably going to be running on Apple’s latest chipset, Apple A9.

It seems that there is not much additional feature for these two new tablet models from Apple which can really make us excited. However, since it is not an official release from Apple, therefore, we should look forward for it nearer to the release date.

Most Apple iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus Will Come with New A9 Chipset Manufactured by Samsung

Apple’s iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S is reported to come with the company’s own A9 Chipset as the processor. It is reported that Apple’s A9 chipset will be manufactured by both Samsung and TSMC (Taiwan Semi Conductor Company) with the latter company tasked with about 30% of the chipset. It seems that Samsung will have an upper hand in manufacturing the SoC as the company has already proven that it can manufacture a 14nm-chip processing technology for Samsung’s own Exynos 7420 chipset which is used in Samsung Galaxy S6 without any hiccups.

TSMC, on the other hand, will not start the mass production until the last quarter of the year. Therefore, this could be mean that the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus that is available during the initial days after the launch event will run on processor manufactured by Samsung, if there is no schedule change from TSMC.  TSMC has manufactured all the A8 chipset which was used in iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus last year.

Apparently, apart from the A9 chipset order, Apple has also given order to manufacture the Touch ID fingerprint readers and Cirrus Logic audio chip that will be used in upcoming iPhone 6S series to TSMC as well. However ,there is no official announcement about this.

iPhone 6S and iPhone  6S Plus is expected to launch by the end of the year with only 80 millions units shipped out. The figure is much lower compared with the estimation provided by the market analysts.

Apple Rumored to Place Smaller Orders for Upcoming iPad Pro

It has been a long time since Apple is rumored to be working on a bigger version of iPad which most probably made to compete with Microsoft Surface 3 Pro in terms of productivity. However, this time, instead of going all out with the new product, it seems that Apple is taking a safer route by ordering lesser product components to the company’s supplier compared to what the market analyst has expected.

This move can be considered as the result of the weakening demand for tablets and the lesser sales of iPad compared to 5-inch smartphone.  Nowadays most users prefer a smartphone with a 5-inch display screen compared to a bigger inch tablets.  The upcoming iPad is rumored to be known as either iPad Pro or iPad Plus and it will have a 12.9-inch display screen.

The upcoming iPad is also rumored to feature a 2048 x 2732 resolution touch screen with the same ppi as iPad Air 2. The touch screen will also support Force Touch feature whereby it is a feature that can differentiate the pressure that the user put on the screen to perform different action depending on it. There also will be a USB3.1 with Type-C connector and a much more improved chipset as well as RAM. However, there is no confirmation whether it is going to be the final specifications or there will be changes later on.

Apple is reported to start mass-manufacturing the new iPad in late September and the launch is expected to be somewhere in mid-November.

Apple Told Suppliers to be Ready for iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus Huge Orders

With the success of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, Apple is confident that the next flagship smartphones, iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will also be a huge success. The company is reported to ask the suppliers to make components enough for about 85 to 90 millions of handsets by 31 December as Apple plans to keep the screen size the same. This means that iPhone 6s will have a 4.7-inch display screen size which is the same as iPhone 6 while iPhone 6s Plus will have a 5.5-inch display screen size which is the same as iPhone 6 Plus.

The unit numbers which is ordered is reportedly to be higher than the previous order which Apple placed for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Last year, Apple has placed order for 70 to 80 million units for the previous model.

Apple will be featuring a new feature on the two new models, Force Touch, which the company believes that it will be a game changing feature. Currently, it was being implemented for Apple Watch. Force Touch allows the device to differentiate a hard tap from a light tap on the screen which will then perform a certain different action altogether.

The new flagship smartphones are rumored to use the Series 7000 aluminium to prevent them from bending as well as the rear camera is going to be a 12MP. Moreover, they will be running on the new A9 chipset and having a 2GB RAM.  They also expected to be available in Rose Gold color option.

Apple 6s and Apple 6s Plus is rumored to be officially announced on 11 September and will be released on 18 September.

iPhone 6 Number One Enemy is Gallium Chemical Element

Apple’s iPhone 6 body is made of aluminum. Similar to other metal or plastic, aluminum is also having a weakness. One of it is another chemical element named Gallium. An experiment was done by pouring 500 grams of gallium over aluminum back of iPhone 6 and let it stay overnight, in the next morning; the device is unrecognizable.

Gallium is a chemical element which goes with symbol Ga in the periodic table and atomic number 31.  It does not occur in free form in nature but there is a trace of it in zinc ores and bauxite. It is a soft, silvery metal which is a solid in low temperature and melts at 29.76 Celcius.

In the video shown below, the experiment was done to show the damage that can be done by Gallium to the back of iPhone 6. The back of iPhone 6 was scraped up to allow the gallium to seep through but the ports and connectors were taped to give the handset the probability to work after it was left in that arrangement for a night.

When checked for the result the next morning, the body of the iPhone 6 was so brittle such that it peeled away when touched showing the components inside. However, the device was still able to be turned on initially but towards the end of the video, we can see that once an iPhone 6, now it’s just a smoldering, bubbling mess.

Rumors say Apple Watch 2 Screen will Have no Changes in Shape, Size or Resolution

A fresh report out of South Korea says that Apple Watch 2 display will have the same shape, size and resolution as the first generation Apple Watch. Looks like Apple is sticking to the same square face for its next gen smartwatch. If the report is true, fans who were expecting a round watch face from Apple will be disappointed.

Apple Watch 2 will apparently have the same 1.32-inch 272 x 340 resolution OLED display for its 38mm version and 1.5-inch 312 x 390 resolution display for the 42mm version like Apple’s current Watch. Currently, LG alone supplies glass screens for the Apple Watch but according to the new report, Samsung will also be supplying the flexible OLED display to the Cupertino giant along with LG. This contradicts earlier rumors claiming that LG will remain the sole display supplier for the next gen Apple Watch too.

It is said that to accommodate a bigger battery, the Apple Watch 2 display might be thinner compared to the precious version. Lower battery life is one of the main issues with the Apple Watch. Improving the battery capacity will keep the Apple fans happy. There are also rumors that the upcoming Apple Watch 2 will be a standalone device like Samsung’s Gear S so it can make calls and receive calls and notifications by itself without requiring it to be paired with an iPhone.

The Apple Watch 2 is expected to be launched by the company next year.

Steve Jobs Movie: First Official Full-Length Trailer Released

After the Official First Look teaser trailer released in May this year, Universal Pictures has now released a full-length trailer of the upcoming movie “Steve Jobs”. The two and a half minute trailer gives us some glimpses of the Steve Jobs biopic directed by Academy Award-winner Danny Boyle.

The movie has been adapted from the bestselling biography “Steve Jobs” by Walter Isaacson. The script for the movie has been written by Aaron Sorkin and it is said that he has done a great job of it. The movie focuses on Steve Job’s professional life in Apple as well as his personal life, touching on his relationship with his daughter Lisa Brennan-Jobs.

Michael Fassbender has played the role of Steve Jobs while Seth Rogen is the Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and Kate Winslet is the initial Macintosh team member Joanna Hoffman in the movie. Jeff Daniels plays John Sculley, former CEO of Apple who had ousted Steve Jobs.

Have a look at the video:

The movie runs through Apple’s initial growth followed by events leading to Steve Job’s ouster from the company and later his return. We will get to see the background story of how brand “Apple” was built, behind-the-scenes for three product launches (but only up to the introduction of iPod) and how Steve Jobs rose to become the epicenter of the modern digital revolution.

This not the first instance that a movie has been made on Steve Jobs. Earlier, a film titled “Jobs” was made where Ashton Kutcher played the role of Jobs but the movie did not perform well at the box office.

However, the upcoming movie “Steve Jobs” seems to have generated a lot of interest and is expected to do well when it hits the theaters on October 9 this year.

iPhone6S Boasts Double LTE Speed and More Efficient with new Qualcomm chipset

iPhone6S is reported to have a redesigned wireless system with Qualcomm LTE chip. According to the image of iPhone 6S prototype shared by a few sources, it seems like the device will be using Qualcomm’s MDM9635M chipset which is also known as ‘9X35’ Gobi modem platform. There are a few improvements for this chip compared to the current chip which is used in the current iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

One of the differences which are can be easily seen is the download speed when connecting to internet using LTE. It is expected that the LTE download speed will be doubled compared to the current ‘9X25’ chip that used in the current iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. The download speed is expected to be up to 300Mbps theoretically with the real world performance closer to 225Mbps or lower. The current download speed of the chip found in iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus is about 150Mbps. There is no change on the 50 Mbps upload speed limit though.

Another difference is the size of the new iPhone’s logicboard. It seems to be narrower and more compact than the current iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. This could mean that there is larger battery size. With more power efficient chip combined with a larger battery and iOS 9’s new power saving features, this means that longer battery life.

The “9X35” chip is manufactured using a newer 20nm production process while the current iPhones are manufactured using the 28nm process. The new chip falls into “Category 6” cellular modems due to its speed. Thus it will allow consumers to have shorter download time as well as faster loading time despite of the uneven network response time.  On top of that, it also support other technology such as DC-HSPA, EVDO Rev. B, CDMA 1x, GSM and TD-SCDMA.

The new iPhone will only be ready in 2016.

Low Power Feature on iOS 9 Will Increase the Apple Devices Performance

There are a lot of improvements on the next iOS 9 update. One of them is on the battery life. Compared to the current battery life size, after you have installed iOS 9, you will get an extension 3 hours of battery life on your iPad or iPhone. On top of that Apple is reported to turn off the features which use bigger power such as sensors and push notifications so that it can save up some battery.

Some of you might be wondering how Apple does that. Apple make it possible by a known method called processor throttling. It is a process to regulate the rate which the application processing is conducted either statically or dynamically. HTC has also used this method on its flagship smartphone HTC One M9. The device is using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 chipset which is reported to suffer from overheating. Unfortunately the side effect of it is that the performance was reduced.

However, it seems like it is not the case with Apple. Below is the result from MacRumors when it tested iOS 9 beta through Geekbench 3 for iOS, iPhone 6 plus multi core score fell from 2891 to 1751 when the Low Power Mode action is deactivated whereas the single core performance dropped from 1606 to 1019.

lowpowermodeperformancereduction-800x707

The side effect of losing a little bit of performance seems like not really a good idea. However, with a low battery life, it also makes other features such as the cores or RAM seems to be less significant. However, it seems like Apple manage to keep it balance. iOS 9 final version is expected to release in September.

Apple Curved iPhone Rumored Released by 2018

Apple is rumored to release a curved iPhone by 2018. On top of that, the technology company is rumored to use OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) as the screen of the iPhone’s in the future. With this move, hopefully, it can solve the existing issue which plagued the current iPhone’s screen display including color saturation, accuracy and brightness. It is not surprising that Apple has patented this to USPTO just in case.

If Apple uses OLED –based flexible screen in the future, it will have a positive impact to the manufacturing companies out there since Apple has not done it before so it is expected that there will be a lot of order from the company. Currently Apple is using flexible OLED screens for Apple Watch which the display is supplied by LG Display and Samsung Display.

LG Display, one of Apple major display supplier has released its own flagship smartphone with flexible display in G Flex 2.  LG plans to move its LCD lines in Gumi factory to OLED line so that the company is ready to do mass production in case there is a huge demand for it. It is expected that the mass production will start in 2017.

Samsung on the other hand, has started to use curved screen display in their flagship smartphone, Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge which was released earlier this year.  We cannot wait to try the final product!

Apple Reported Working on TDDI In-House for the Next iPhone Smartphone

Apple is reported to be developing Touch and Display Driver Integration (TDDI) in house for the next iPhone smartphone. The TDDI single chip solution is expected to come with integrated fingerprint sensor as well. Therefore for the next iPhone, there will be no more physical Home button, instead, the screen itself will have dual functionality, one is to unlock the device while another one is as navigational purposes.

In the recent years, Apple had already done some development internally. With the expansion of the in-house development by Apple, it is likely to make a huge impact on the external semi conductor companies worldwide. One thing for sure is that the order from the giant technology company will decrease than the previous years. However, if there is a huge demand from the consumer, it is most likely that Apple will need to outsource the manufacturing part to other companies to help them to fulfill the demands. Global semiconductor companies are also going through some changes. Since the beginning of this year, there are several big companies which merged or acquitted by other company. This includes Avago’s acquisition of Broadcom which is also one of the major Apple suppliers.

The next iPhone smartphone is rumored to be thinner and bigger display with the removal of Home button. However, nothing can be confirmed until now.

iPhone 6S and 6S Plus Rumored to be Stronger and Comes with Rose Gold Color On Top of the Usual Color

There are a lot of rumors going on regarding iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus prior to the official announcement for both smartphones. According to the well-connected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities, the next iPhone will be a little bit wider and taller by around 0.15 millimeters and thicker by 0.2 millimeters.

Apart from the changes on the physical appearance of the smartphones, it is rumored that both smartphones’ bodies will be made of 7000-series aluminium which apparently the strongest aluminium alloys that is currently available in the market. With this material, hopefully, it can prevent the smartphones from bending under certain conditions. The material also reported to be used in Apple Watch Sport and regular editions.

On top of that, iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus is rumored to come with a new color, rose gold color, which apparently, the color will look like the 18K rose gold Apple Watch edition. Another rumor stated that Apple could go all out and release a luxury 18K gold iPhone which is targeted to the rich. The existing colors such as the champagne gold color will be getting more 18K yellow gold-like shade whereas the Space Gray color will be darker.

Kuo speculated that iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus will be released in September. Looking back at previous reports which stated that Apple has already started contacting its suppliers to start the process, it seems like it is possible to release during that period.

Apple New s Service and Beats Music Service Handcrafted by Professionals

Apple announced a lot of new features in the next iOS 9. Some of them are the news service and Beats service. In the last WWDC 2015, Apple revealed that the news app will bring multiple articles across multiple web locations. Even though during the presentation, the company only showed samples from major news publishers which also are the company’s partners, Apple also mentioned that smaller news outlets will also be able to send their own RSS feeds.

On top of that, if we take a look at most of the job listings that Apple has posted in the past few weeks on their website, it is hinted that most probably Apple is planning to manually selected the articles that are going to be published in the News app. On the job listings, it is posted that Apple is looking for candidates who are majored in Journalism and with five or more years of experience in newsroom. Moreover, they should be able to identify the most suitable articles based on the categories and scopes.

Apparently, Apple has taken a different approach from Google or other apps. Google relies on algorithms to detect the best news for each category while Apple plans to do it manually. Another example is one of Apple’s playlist for Beats service by the name of Beats 1, apparently Beats 1 is manually created by actual DJs whereas Spotify uses algorithms to select the songs that the listeners would most likely to enjoy.

iOS 9 will be released this fall.

LG Rumored to be the Only Display Supplier for Apple Watch

Apple has launched the first version of Apple Watch this year.  If Apple is going to maintain a 12-month cycle for releasing a new product, then we can expect that the 2nd version of Apple Watch which is probably going to be named as simply as Apple Watch 2 is going to be released in 2016. However, there is no specific time frame when it is going to be released in 2016.

One thing for sure is that LG is still going to be the main display supplier of Apple Watch 2 as it is for the first version of Apple Watch.  LG is estimated to have supplied the display for about 68 percent of all wearable devices which is shipped in the first quarter of 2015. Samsung will most probably going to join LG to supply the display part for the next generation of Apple Watch. However, the latest report suggests that Apple is considering other display manufacturer as well.

The display that LG supplied to Apple for Apple Watch is none other than the P-OLED displays or Plastic-OLED.  The display technology is chosen for the wearable product as it can have thin bezels and can easily shape into different shapes even though it is made of plastic.

Prior to the release of Apple Watch 2, its OS which is simply called Apple’s WatchOS 2 will be launched soon with some improvements over the original OS.  One of the improvements is to include information from third-party apps for the watch face.

New Feature in iOS 9 Able to Predict Where You Are Going to Put Your Fingers

Appleis coming with iOS 9 which rumored to have a lot of features which is going to make your life easier. Apart from the” Continuation” concept and the multi-tasking concept that Apple is trying to push in their next products, Apple is pushing a feature which is able to predict where you are going to put your finger next.

Some of you might be wondering why this feature? It is because by guessing where the user might tap next, the smartphone is able to preload any relevant processes and thus reducing delays in executing the actual action.  The result from this is a faster app. The feature is called “Touch Prediction”. The new feature also can be developed by analyzing and learning from the user behavior.

Apple has launched iOS 9 out to developers recently before it is released as a final version to the mas consumers. The reason for doing this is for the developers to test whether their apps are compatible with the new release as well as for them to feedback to Apple on which area that can be improved on before its final release.

Apple has always excited us on which technology that they are going to embed on their next product. We always look forward to that.

Apple Music Streaming Service launched, Beats 1 to be its first radio station

Apple had revolutionized digital music with its iTunes and iPods, providing stiff competition to the CD industry. Now the company is joining the new age of subscription music by jumping into the music streaming bandwagon. Apple announced Apple Music, its music-streaming app, at the WWDC with the tagline, “All the Ways You Love Music. All in One Place.”  Music downloads, streaming music and radio have all been combined into a single app.

Apple’s new music streaming service will take on existing providers like Spotify with ambitious plans to get at least 100 million global subscribers. Currently, Spotify dominates the market with more than 60 million users of which about 15 million are paid subscribers.

Apple will transfer users of the existing Beats Music streaming service over to Apple music service. Also, when you are buying albums or songs from iTunes, you will get an option to subscribe to the Apple Music streaming service. The existing iTunes radio has been rebuilt to a live radio station and the company has roped in well known music artists such as Zane Lowe, Dr. Dre, Pharrell, will.i.am, Drake, Muse and David Guetta as DJs.

Apple’s first radio station will be Beats 1 and it will be broadcast in more than 100 countries 24×7. The creative minds behind the Beats 1 radio are Zane Lowe, Ebro Darden and Julie Adenuga. Check out the video ad below:

As the earlier leaks suggested, the music app has been totally revamped. A mini player is constantly present at the bottom of the screen showing you what is playing at the time but you can remove it with a swipe if you don’t want it. There is new album artwork which can also be swiped away. It also has a For You section, which shows curated suggestions after the app has learnt about your music tastes.

There will be thousands of HD quality music videos, which you can run directly from there. There will also be a feature called Connect in the new app that allows artists to have a social network page where they will be able to upload music, photos, videos, messages and status updates. This page can be shared with their fans.

As for charges, the Apple Music streaming service will cost $9.99 a month as was rumored earlier. A family plan for up to 6 members will cost $14.99 but for this, you must have iCloud family sharing to be active. However, you can listen to Beats 1 radio, follow your favorite artists on Connect or tune in to ad-supported stations even if you don’t have a subscription.
