Softcard Support for Windows Phone is Terminated as Google Acquired the Technology

Softcard is a mobile payment service owned jointly by Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T. Recently Google has purchased the technology behind this mobile payment service, however, just to be clear, Google does not purchase the company. This way is seen as Google’s way to compete with ApplePay which is provided by Apple. This process comes with a few changes. One thing that remains the same for now is that the app for Android will continue to work, therefore, users can continue to tap and pay at over 275,000 locations in the states.

It is recommended that Softcard users to download Google Wallet. Sadly, Google is planning to shut down the Softcard app and terminate Softcard wallets. However, the challenge is that Softcard users cannot easily switch to Google Wallet as personal information is not part of the transaction between Softcard and Google. Therefore,  after Softcard user has terminated the wallet service provided by Softward, the loyalty cards cannot be used.

On top of that Google announced that the tech company is also shutting down the Softcard Windows Phone app. There is no confirmation date on when the app will be closed.  Moreover, Google is expected to launch Android Pay at Google I/O. Android Pay is an API for developers who want to add a mobile payments option to their apps. Android Pay will be separated from Google Wallet.

Softcard is Now Supported by Nokia Lumia Icon

Softcard is a payment app which is currently owned by joint venture of Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile. Recently, there is rumor that the company is experiencing financial difficulties since the company is laying out most of its employee. On top of that, there is another rumor that Google is willing to buy it at a price below $100 millions.

Despite all these rumors, the mobile payment system is now supported on Nokia Lumia Icon. Therefore, there will be four Windows Phone models which support the Softcard apps. The remaining three models are Nokia Lumia 822, HTC One (M8) for Windows and Nokia Lumia 928.

Softcard app is available on Windows Phone Store for free. To be able to use the feature on Nokia Lumia Icon, you need to download and install the app. After that, you can add and store eligible credit cards. Alternatively, you can use a pre-paid card and use that to make mobile payments. The apps also bring you great deals from retailers to your phones. You also need to install a special secure SIM card from Verizon.

To make payment, you will need to enter your PIN number once you open the Softcard app. Select the card you wish to use and put your phone nearer to the “contactless” symbol on the terminal when you want to check out.  Currently, Softcard is supported by more than 200,000 locations.

Google is Interested to Buy Softcard – A Mobile Payment Service Company

Mobile payment is becoming more popular these days. A few years ago, Google started this trend by launching Google Wallet then last year, Apple launched Apple Pay. However, it seems like not many people know about Softcard. Like the other two services, Softcard is also a mobile payment application that based on NFC. It is established by AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon which originally goes by the name ISIS in 2010.

With the news that Softcard has laid off about 60 employees as well as has been in a consolidation phase earlier this month, it seems like it is having a financial difficulties.  On top of that, another source was saying that at one point the company’s burn rate was around half a million dollars per day or around $15 million per month.

There is rumor that the sale price can be as low as below $100 million. It seems like Google is interested to buy the company for its patents. Paypal and Microsoft have reported to also approach the company. Another possibility could be that in the event that external sale cannot be achieved, JV (Joint Venture) partners like AT&T or Verizon will take it under one of their wings since they are also have been looking for ways of developing their own wallet service for mobile devices.

Nokia Lumia 928 and Lumia 822 gets the Lumia Denim Update along with Softcard mobile payment

Microsoft has recently released its much awaited Lumia Denim update to a large number of Lumia handsets out there. Recently, the update has arrive to the Nokia Lumia 928 and the Lumia 822 and other special feature that arrives along with is the Softcard mobile payment system. Last month, HTC for its Windows based flagship One M8 showed up that it too supports the Softcard mobile payment system. Softcard that was earlier known as the ISIS is now jointly owned by T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T.

The Softcard mobile payment system requires a phone with NFC, a secured SIM card and the Softcard app. However on making payment using the Softcard, you first need to open the app and enter your PIN number. Select the card you want to use to make payment and tap on the terminal with your handset to make the payment. Softcard supports cards from American Express, Wells Fargo and Chase.

This app is currently available on the Windows Phone Store for the Verizon branded Lumia 928 and Lumia 822. This mobile payment system is supported over nearly 20000 retail locations making the purchase check out quick and easy.
