Apple WWDC 2014 Slides Leaked : Showing iPhone 6

Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2014 takes place on June 2-6, 2014 in San Francisco. We are already aware that Apple has plans to unveil iOS8 and OS X 10.10 in this year’s WWDC. But what keeps everyone curious is that, is there going to be any announcement about an iPhone 6 in the conference?

Recently, we have been seeing quite a few mock-ups, designs and shells of iPhone 6 leaked on the internet, and now a few of them appear to be fake ones. If you are wondering how we can even be so sure those were not real, here comes the evidence – another leak. A video containing WWDC 2014 slides which appear to be captured behind the show stage at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. Yes, we got details out of the Worldwide Developers Conference 2014 even before it take place.

The leaked captured video contains slides showing front of an iPhone 6, then the back of the phone and finally sides too. The device on the slides appears a silver white device with rounded edges that look more like the recently launched iPads.

That said we have quite a few questions popping out of our mind. Could this be the real deal after all those rumors and fake leaks? Could the Apple be planning to unveil the first hardware at the Worldwide Developers Conference since the iPhone 4?

The device in the leaked video containing WWDC slides looks in line with few of the recent leaks (of course not all). But it brings up another question; if Apple unveils iPhone 6 at the WWDC then it will contradict earlier rumors that the device will be released in September.

We don’t have to wait to know any further as the WWDC 2014 takes place today and we’ll get more details to compare with the rumors to be sure if there is going to an iPhone 6 release this month.

Apple Patents Embedding Sapphire Displays in LiquidMetal for iPhone Chassis

Last Tuesday Apple gained a major patent in method of manufacturing the phone chassis. This patent will allow them to make iPhone chassis seamlessly as transition from metal to glass becomes direct. Due to this the iPhones will have a more subtle and nicer finish.

This patent was filed by Apple six years ago in 2008 but was granted last week. The patent reads “Methods and systems for integrally trapping a glass insert in a metal bezel” in layman’s terms it is method to embed sapphire display in LiquidMetal chassis. Practically this means your iPhone display will not be glued to the metal chassis but will be molded such a way that it becomes an integral part of the metal chassis. This will make the phones for resistant to wear and tear also nicer in looks.

Apple is already a pioneer in using sapphire display panel; this patent will give an upper hand in manufacturing phones with sapphire display. iPhones made from this patented method would be unibody design. So it would be impossible for the user to open his iPhone. So if iPhone has stopped you will need a trip to the Apple Store you cannot check the phone yourself.

But till now only patent has been granted so it will take a while for Apple to introduce LiquidMetal in an manufacturing. Nevertheless we can expect to see a LiquidMetal iPhone in sometime future.

Samsung Partners with Oculus to Make VR Headset

Samsung is working with Oculus VR to release Virtual Reality products. Oculus VR is a virtual reality startup company owned by Facebook and the company has kick started the current wave of VR products.

Samsung is handling the hardware side of the product, while Oculus handles the software. It’s a swap deal, Samsung would give Oculus early access to its next generation OLED screens while Oculus would give Samsung early access to its mobile software development kit and helps user interface software development. Oculus continues to make products of its own such as gaming focused PC based virtual reality headset and it’s in need of Samsung’s next generation OLED screens for the product development. Now, let’s see more on the unlikely partnership between Samsung and Oculus.

samsung-oculus-Though Samsung wants to be the first company in the market to release a virtual reality headset, it’s not ready to invest so much of time and money that Oculus and Sony are. Aside, Oculus wants to make a gaming focused high quality virtual reality headset, but it doesn’t want to rush without required high quality next generation hardware. Thus, these two companies partner with each other to meet their immediate business needs. Oculus makes the software for Samsung’s upcoming virtual reality headset and Samsung makes OLED screens for Oculus’ final product.

The partnership has both risk and benefits. Samsung is a consumer electronics giant and the company investing in marketing and producing its own virtual reality headset hugely grows the medium. If it’s not a good product then it can possibly poison the medium and the product could turn in to another Virtual Boy. It might make consumers even more apprehensive about virtual reality as a medium.

Sources told that Samsung is using an early form of Oculus’ mobile SDK; it’s an exclusive use as part of the deal between the companies. As part of the deal Oculus is getting OLED screens that are of higher resolution than 1080p, the screens will be used in a few of Samsung’s next phones.

Hardware

futureSamsung’s VR headset uses your phone directly instead of having its own screen. VR headset plugs in to your phone using an existing port most probably via micro-USB and becomes the screen. The headset comes with a built-in sensors and an accelerometer, so any motion tracking functionality wouldn’t consume phone’s processor.

There are few folks who have dev kits are still running the VR headset on Galaxy s4 phones and they say the experience is too good. Said that, the device would run either a Galaxy S5 or potentially its successor and of course it will be tweaked for optimal VR headset performance. The VR headset can be used as a standalone media device or with a paired game controller.

You can see through the phone using the rear camera, which shows a video feed of the outside world to your eyes. It’s a smart addition for more realistic long-term use.

The unit got some buttons including standard Android buttons such as Home, Back and Recent Apps. Visibility to the details of other buttons is too minimal at this stage however it’s been told that none of the buttons are used for interactivity. But, there are chances for changes to these specifications to chance when the final product is made available to consumers.

Software

VRThe dev kit got a basic UI (User Interface); it’s an empty 3D space with various demos. You interact with floating objects by nodding at them. Nodding at an object selects it basically. The interactivity method may be far different in the final product comparing to the dev kit. It’s told that the final software would contain voice, touch and more forms of interaction.

Now, UI and OS are in a very early stage. Oculus’ mobile SDK is in very early stage, the software it’s able to build isn’t close to a finished product. There was some information shared about two different demos, neither of which involved interactivity. First demo, you are at the beach with jamming hippies and the in the second one, you dive from a plane. The sources said that they were impressed with the device.

Samsung may advertize this device as a media player as well. There are very few media experiences for virtual reality headsets. It’s said that gaming experiences are pared down and there are no guarantee Samsung will ship VR headset with a game pad. The company is focusing on larger market instead of just the early adopter who’ll take a chance on VR headset. Samsung and Oculus are taking a risk in partnering on this virtual reality headset and it has attracted a lot of attentions, let’s wait and see how this partnership and product evolves.

Leaked patent applications can be of Samsung"s new wearable

As rumours have it,Samsung’s next Tizen featuring smart-watch which  is presumed to be capable enough to make/take calls, and send/receive email without being tethered to another device. The watch is also expected to incorporate a heart rate monitor, a camera, GPS, and Bluetooth. It is almost official now as per released some Samsung patent applications.

The primary idea of looks will be something like this. With its circular face, the watch in the applications comprised of the USPTO by Samsung, looks like the brother of the Motorola Moto 360. From the patent images, we figured out that it will be dependent on the gestures to control the functions of the wearable. One of the images of watch highlights the fact that user is  moving two fingers away from each other, in front of a reader that is apparently located on the back of the band.

Speaking of co-incidence, the timing of the expected release of these patent applications aligns with the leak about Samsung’s new wearable. The patent showcases a device that will fetch its network connectivity via tethering with a smart-phone or tablet. This makes it against the stand-alone features about the new smart-watch. So it might turn out that these patent applications have no relevance with the leaked-wearable images as expected from the company in upcoming summer. Meanwhile, it still could be a slight hint of connection between these patents and the upcoming device, which will be giving idea about the Graphic-User-Interface or the design of the watch. Let’s see how the details progress further.

Microsoft’s smartwatch planning to align with Android and iOS

Since last year ,a lot of talks was in the air about smart-watch from Microsoft which has allegedly been in development. A new report signals the fact that the Seattle-based tech-giant may plan to make it compatibkle with diverse platforms

This smart-watch from Big M  will supposedly work with Windows Phones. Android and iOS devices also will be compatible with it and will come with functionalities like measure heart-rate and push the data to the handset of choice.

As it came to the light, Microsoft has even enlisted the assistance of some of their Kinect developers to enhance the smart-watch, so that it can “continuously measure heart rate through the day and night.” The battery-power is estimated to last for almost two days of nonstop usage.

The Kinect connection seems logical when you think about that the creator of Kinect, Alex Kipman, who has been dealing with making windows function on small displays. Julie Larson-Green also suggested that wearables have been in Microsoft’s future expansions as she said: “sensors are going to become a big part of how you think about things.”

For now, no set release-date has been declared for Microsoft’s wearable, but sources consider that it may reach your destination as early as this summer which is purely estimation
