Felicia Day and Her Gamergate Fears

A little background about Felicia Day, she is an actress who starred in TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Supernatural. Recently, she fame as writer and lead of online gaming sitcom The Guild. Regarding the gamergate,it seems like she has previously said little about the grassroots campaign against feminism in gaming. Her comment is only found in a few replies on Twitter which the journalists have tagged her in the article. Siding her.


A little background about Gamergate, it is normally referred as hashtag #gamergate which is a controversy on misogyny and harassment in video game culture. It started in August 2014 which began after indie game developer Zoe Quinn’s ex-boyfriend allegedly accused her having a romantic relationship with a journalist for the video game news site Kotaku, Nathan Grayson.


It led to harassment of Quinn, including false accusation that the relationship has led to positive coverage of Quinn’s game. The conflict then becomes more intense when a number of gaming industry employees supportive of Quinn receiving harassment, threats of violence and doxxing. As a result some of them even flee their home. Doxxing is a practice of researching and publishing personal information about an individual practised in the internet.


Felicia Day explained that her silence was not because of some grand strategy but out of fear that the issue that it will create after she has spoken out. The biggest fear is being doxxed.


“ I have tried to retweet a few of the articles I’ve seen dissecting the issue in support, but personally I am terrified to be doxxed for even typing the words ‘gamergate’.” She explained further that she have had stalker and restraining orders issued in the past and people showing up on her doorstep when her personal information was hard to get.
