Reports: Samsung Galaxy S Edge and Galaxy S6 supposed to support the Gear VR

Samsung announced its first virtual reality headset the Gear VR last year however it has support for only one device at the moment which is the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. A recent report published by Sam Mobile, Korean giant is planning to offer the Gear VR support on its two most rumored upcoming flagship the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S Edge.

Not the interesting thing would be that the current Galaxy Note 4 offers a 5.7inch display and the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S Edge has 5.1inch screens. This means that the company could possibly release a new VR adapter for these two handsets or there might also be a smaller variant of the Gear VR headset. However, this is just an assumption for the moment as of now and we would certainly like to soon an official word from the company on this.

Both the devices are said to be announced next month in March.

Along with the Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Note Edge, and Gear S, Samsung also launched the Gear VR during its event at IFA Berlin. The company used the event to reveal not just its new Samsung Galaxy Note 4 smartphone, but also the Gear VR head-mounted display (HMD) that will use it’s 5.7-inch Quad HD display for virtual reality (VR) experiences.

At the moment, the virtual reality headset developed in partnership with Oculus is already up for pre-order in the UK. Mobile Fun is currently accepting pre-orders for Gear VR starting at £150 GBP(or €189).

The online retailer identifies itself as a ‘Samsung Authorized Dealer’, lending some weight to this price tag. On the other hand, Mobile Fun is known for putting up pre-order pages for newly announced mobile devices very early, sometimes too early.

Unfortunately the site doesn’t mention a shipping date, indicating we’re still left with the vague mid-October 2014 window. Given that the retailer is a phone accessory specialist, it doesn’t list the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 or its pricing, leaving that part of the cost in question.

The Samsung Gear VR uses the 5.7-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display of the Galaxy Note 4, which slides inside the headset itself. It uses accelorator, magnetic, gyrometer and proximity sensors in creating the 360 degree experience. Samsung says there’s a super accuracy sensor that means virtually no lag while using the wireless Gear VR.

Recently, photos of Samsung Gear VR were leaked which showed only the back of the device that depicted very little about the upcoming virtual reality goggles of the company. The alleged front side photos of the device have been released. Reports say that these pictures portray true device and it will how Samsung Gear VR is going to end up in the market.

If the reports are true then Gear VR will be something very rare in the market. The goggle’s front side contains mirror only with some paint-free units and some units in Samsung blue color. It is expected that the device will come mostly in blue.

The apps screenshots and product card have shown and confirmed that model number of the device is SM-R230 and the name of the device remains ‘Gear VR’. The presented modes of the device from the pictures are “see-through” and “VR world”. This information reveals that Gear VR will not be a device to leave at home but it can be worn outside like Google Glass.

The VR app screenshots reveal two types of glasses which are different from each other. One is like sports glasses while other is like a scuba mask.

The Gear VR also works on voice commands. Simply spelling out the name of the app will take to it. On the right side of the device, back button and touch pad are present to support the voice control. They help in browsing.

At Berlin, Gear VR is expected to be a great reveal from Samsung at this year’s IFA Conference.

Samsung Gear VR works much like Google Cardboard but it is not made of cardboards, lenses and magnets. Gear VR is a goggle like device with OLED display and it has touchpad also. The Gear VR is not just a box with a screen. It runs software to gather data from your Smartphone then split it to generate 3D effects. It is not known yet what kind of software Gear VR is running, although it is known that Samsung is in collaboration with Oculus VR for developing Gear VR. However, it is not a matter of concern that which software Gear VR is running as it collects content from Android phones. It is also in the news that Samsung will be launching SDK for its Gear VR when it will be introduced.

That’s all for what is known about Gear VR for now. According to the news, the time of its announcement is set at IFA 2014 which will take place in Berlin from 5th to 10th September. Samsung is also expected to announce its Galaxy Note 4 around this time. After the announcement of Gear VR, developers will soon get SDK but it is not known how long Gear VR will take to reach the market.
