Samsung develops new high speed 60GHz Wi-Fi Technology

Samsung Electronics has announced that it has developed a new 60GHz Wi-Fi technology that is capable of transmitting data five times faster than the current existing speed. Currently, the consumer electronics devices can give a maximum data transmission speed of 866Mbps or 108MB per second but with Samsung’s new 60GHz Wi-Fi technology, speeds as high as 4.6Gbps or 575MB per second can be achieved. The faster speed implies that big files can be transferred through the network a lot faster. Say a 1GB file will take just 3 seconds to move from one device to another.

Kim Chang Yong, DMC R&D Center Head at Samsung Electronics says:

Samsung has successfully overcome the barriers to the commercialization of 60GHz millimeter-wave band Wi-Fi technology, and looks forward to commercializing this breakthrough technology. New and innovative changes await Samsung’s next-generation devices, while new possibilities have been opened up for the future development of Wi-Fi technology.

With this new 802.11ad standard 60GHz Wi-Fi technology, Samsung has achieved a breakthrough in removing the co-channel interference in the network irrespective of the number of devices using it, thus achieving 10 times higher actual speed compared to the existing 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi technologies.

The problem with adopting the 60GHz Wi-Fi technology commercially was the low penetration properties of the millimeter waves used here. The high frequency millimeter waves travel by line-of-sight and get weakened by atmosphere, foliage, buildings etc. This results in poor signal and data transfer.

According to Samsung, it has been able to circumvent this problem by successfully using modern circuit design and technologies and developing a “wide-coverage beam-forming antenna” to make this technology commercially viable. By developing the first micro beam-forming technology in the world, Samsung has been able to improve the overall signal quality. The company has also developed a novel method by which several devices can connect to a network at the same time.

Like the 2.4GHz and 5GHz band spectrums, the 60GHz band spectrum is unlicensed and its commercialization is expected to begin next year. Samsung plans to use this new Wi-Fi technology for telecommunication, audio visual, medical and a range of other devices. This new 60GHz Wi-Fi technology will also be useful for developing Samsung Smart Home and the emerging concept of Internet of Things.
