Google Glass might be a cool gadget but sometimes Glass wearers flaunt them around acting like jerks and are called “Glassholes”. Google has published some Do’s and Don’ts for its Google Glass explorers to follow while wearing the Glass. Google feels that being rude will not get others excited about Google Glass and will spoil its brand image.
One of the Do’s says, “Ask for permission. Standing alone in the corner of a room staring at people while recording them through Glass is not going to win you any friends. The Glass camera function is no different from a cell phone so behave as you would with your phone and ask permission before taking photos or videos of others.”
Some Google Glass wearers do not like it when they are asked to take off their Glass at public places. For instance, an engineer Nick Starr was asked to remove his Google Glass at the Lost Lake Cafe and Lounge in Seatle. He was not pleased with this, there was an argument and he was eventually asked to leave by the owners of the Cafe. Nick posted something derogatory about the restaurant on his Facebook page in reply to which, the restaurant called him and his type as “Google Glass wearing man children stinkin up the joint.“
Another Google Glass explorer Katy Kasmai was not pleased when she was asked to take off her Glass at the Feast Restaurant in Third Avenue, New York. She posted this on her Google+ account:
“For the first time ever this place, Feast, in #NYC just asked that I remove +Google Glass because customers have complained of privacy concerns in the past. Never has happened to me before in the one year I’ve had Glass. I left. #throughglass Feast.”
After this, the restaurant started getting one-star ratings on Google reviews from people who might not even have set foot in the restaurant. As Shawn Mernagh giving one-star to Feast wrote, “They discriminate against people who are into new technology. Do not eat here.“
A string of one-star ratings from those who hadn’t even been to Feast caused its overall Google rating to drop to 2.4 which hurt the business a lot. The restaurant felt this to be “malicious and technically a violation of Google’s own terms for leaving reviews.” By giving bad reviews like this, Google Glass wearers really did behave like Glassholes which Google doesn’t want them to do.
When this news became public, some people visited Google reviews and gave Feast five-star reviews which boosted its overall rating to 3.1. All Google Glass wearers are not Glassholes as is proved by a comment from Zenzi Mulder, “Awesome restaurant, kindly asked if I could remove my Google Glass because others were feeling uncomfortable, luckily Im not the kind of entitled douche to refuse that or get butthurt. Had a great meal.“
Google wants the general public to accept Google Glass technology and welcome Glass wearers into the society. If Google Glass explorers are not allowed at various places, it will show the Glass in poor light and hurt its brand image.
As the last point of Google’s Don’ts states:
“Don’t Be creepy or rude (aka, a “Glasshole”). Respect others and if they have questions about Glass don’t get snappy. Be polite and explain what Glass does and remember, a quick demo can go a long way. In places where cell phone cameras aren’t allowed, the same rules will apply to Glass. If you’re asked to turn your phone off, turn Glass off as well. Breaking the rules or being rude will not get businesses excited about Glass and will ruin it for other Explorers.”
