MediaTek allegedly working on a more powerful Helio X30 chipset

Taiwanese chip maker MediaTek known the world over for its chipset solutions which have mostly been for low-end smartphones and tablets but after the impressive performance by its Helio series chipsets Helio X10 and X20 in the mid-to high-range smartphones, it is providing tough competition to the likes of Qualcomm.


Its Helio X10 has been used in several mid-range handsets including HTC One M9+, Meizu MX5, Elife E8 and others. MediaTek announced its Helio X20 SoC in May this year which was the world’s first deca-core chipset for mobile.  Helio X20 will be making its debut inside the Chinese smartphone Elephone P9000 which is expected to launch in mid-October. It is also rumored that Xiaomi might use the MediaTek X20 Soc in its future high-end smartphones.


Even before the devices using X20 enter the market, there are reports from the Chinese media that MediaTek has started work on an even faster and more powerful chipset, the Helio X30.

The new Helio X30 will consist of 10-core architecture with a quad-cluster design having two Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1GHz,  two Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.5GHz, two Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 2GHz and four Cortex-A72 cores clocked at 2.5GHz. In comparison, the Helio X20 has a tri-cluster design with four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.4Ghz, four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 2GHz and two Cortex-A72 cores clocked at 2.5Ghz.


The GPU of the Helio X30 will apparently be Mali-T880, an improvement over the Mali T-800 GPU of the Helio X20. In addition, the X30 will also support 4GB LPDDR4 1600MhZ RAM which was not there in the X20.


MediaTek is also tipped to be working on a Helio X22 SoC which will be a faster version of the Helio X20. It is not known when both the chipsets will be announced by the company. First devices carrying the new chips will probably make an appearance early next year.

Sony Xperia C5 Ultra and Xperia M5 leak fully before official announcement

Sony had posted a teaser on Twitter about new Xperia device announcement on August 3. However, two Sony smartphones Xperia C5 Ultra and Xperia M5 have already leaked ahead of the official announcement via Russian website hi-tech.mail.ru that has published several images as well as preview of the said two handsets.


Although the article on the Russian website has since been removed, the images and specs of Xperia C5 Ultra and Xperia M5 are already circulating over the net. Both the smartphones have been photographed alongside each other. The details about the Sony Xperia C5 Ultra which was known earlier as Sony Lavender, have leaked earlier but the Xperia M5 has not been heard of before.

Let’s have a look at the specs of both the phones:

The Xperia C5 Ultra is the bigger of the two and is quite imposing with its 6-inch display but attractive all the same. The 6-inch display has the resolution of 1080p and the handset has very thin 0.8mm bezels. Because of such thin bezels, it doesn’t appear much bigger than the iPhone 6 Plus which has a 5.5-inch screen.


Other specs include 1.7 GHz octa-core MediaTek MT6752 processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage expandable with microSD card, 13MP cameras with LED flash at both rear and front sides and a 2930 mAh battery. The battery capacity seems a bit on the lower side looking to its display size.


The C5 Ultra will have dual-SIM support and NFC and will run Android Lollipop. It is expected to be priced at about 21k to 22k Rubles which comes to around 340 to 360 Dollars.

The Xperia M5 is the smaller of the two but costlier, sporting a 5-inch 1080p IPS display. It looks like a low-cost sibling of the Xperia Z3+. It has the 2GHZ octa-core MediaTek Helio X10 processor, 3GB of RAM, 16GB of internal memory expandable with microSD card and a 2600mAh battery.


The handset will have a 21MP rear camera with f/2.2aperture, fast auto focus, 5x digital zoom and 4K video recording. The front-facing camera would be 13MP. The Xperia M5 will probably have Sony’s new Exmor RS IMX230 sensor on board and be the device that can take “split-second photos” which Sony teased recently.


It will have a dual-SIM variant and will be IP68 certified for dust and water resistance. The cost of Xperia M5 would be about 24k to 25k Rubles which comes to around 390 to 405 Dollars.


Both the new smartphones Xperia C5 Ultra and Xperia M5 will come in two color variants – White and Black.

New Sony E5663 with 4.6” 1080p display spotted in benchmarks, could it be the Xperia Z4 Compact?

Looks like Sony will soon be offering a successor to the Xperia Z3 Compact. A new Sony smartphone with model E5663 has been spotted on a couple of benchmarking sites and its specs are quite interesting. If the specs are to be believed, the new handset appears to be the next gen Sony Xperia Z4 Compact.


The benchmark data shows that the new Sony E5663 will feature a 4.6-inch display with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels which is an upgrade over Xperia Z3 Compact’s 4.6-inch 720p resolution screen. This is also the first less than 5-inch Sony phone to sport a 1080p display.

The Sony E5663 will be powered by a 64-bit octa-core MediaTek ARM MT6795 processor clocked at 1.95GHz and PowerVR Rogue G6200 GPU. Other specs include 3GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, 20.7MP rear camera and a powerful 13MP front-facing camera. Till now we have seen front-facing cameras only as high as 5MP in Sony devices. So this would make a great selfie phone. The device will run Android Lollipop.

Sony model E5663 has also appeared on the Indian import-export tracker site Zauba.com which shows 2 units of the device to having landed in New Delhi from China. So it is possible that the handset may be launched in India.

Well, for now we can’t say for sure that the model E5663 will be released as Xperia Z4 Compact. It is possible that the handset is launched with a different name.  We will keep you informed as soon as we know more about it.

MediaTek Deca-Core Processor Featured in the Upcoming Elephone P9000

There are a lot of rumors about MediaTek Helio X20 MT6797 going around recently. The most amazing thing is that the chipset will be coming with a 10-core processor which is the first in the industry. Based on this, people are putting a high expectation on the smartphone which will be running on this chipset. Recently, there is confirmation that the 10-core processor chipset will make its initial debut in Elephone P9000.


MediaTek Helio X20 10-core processor is designed in a tri-cluster CPU architecture, 2 core A72 clocked at 2.3GHz, 4 cores A53 clocked at 2GHz as well as 4 cores A53 clocked at 1.4GHz. The structure is aimed to maximize the performance while using the minimum power so the smartphone which equipped with this chipset is expected to be fast as well as power efficient. On top of that, the chipset is expected to support up to 32MP camera with a built-in 3D depth engine, LTE Cat-6 as well as 4K video playback and recording support.


Elephone P9000, on the other hand, will be running on Android 5.1 OS, 4GB RAM, 32GB internal storage which can be expanded to 128GB using external microSD, 20.7MP rear camera and 8MP front camera. The smartphone will have a 5.5-inches Full HD display, dual SIM as well as 3100 mAh battery size. Unfortunately, there is no confirmation whether the smartphone will be using Mali T860 or T880 as the GPU.


Elephone P9000 is expected to be launched in fourth quarter of 2015 with price tagged at $500.

MediaTek to Boost 4G Chip Market Share in Second Half of 2015

MediaTek was known to manufacture components and drawing up designs for consumer electronic goods such as CD-ROM devices, DVD players and TVs before there were smartphones. As the smartphone market grows over the year, the company is known for manufacturing cheap 2G and 3G Chinese handsets. Now, the company is looking for a way to enter U.S. and Western Europe smartphone markets. However, it has Qualcomm as the main competitor which is not easy to defeat.


It seems like MediaTek is able to reduce the phone-design and the mass production cycle from one and a half years to only six months, which makes a lot of people happy. As a result, the company ranks 788 n this year’s Global 2000 list compared to 1029 about a year ago. Qualcomm on the other hand, ranks 158.  Top smartphone makers apparently still prefer to use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon SoC line in their flagship smartphones. Not to mention, Apple who likes to use their own product as much as possible is using Qualcomm’s modems in their iPhone. Samsung on the other hand, has started its own reference design program which is similar to MediaTek.


According to Forbes, the only way for MediaTek to enter US market is by sticking to Chinese smartphone manufacturers such as Xiaomi, Lenovo and Coolpad to use the company’s chip as these companies are set to enter the US market. Major carriers such as Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile are reported to be testing on MediaTek 4G chips on their LTE network. Therefore, it should not take long before MediaTek able to enter the US market.

MediaTek announces Helio P10 octa-core SoC offering premium performance and faster LTE

MediaTek had introduced the Helio X20 Soc in May this year and it was the first processor for mobiles to have 10 cores.  No mobile featuring the Helio X20 has been released yet but it is expected that the Xiaomi may use this MediaTek chip in its Mi Note successor. It doesn’t seem likely that the new Helio X20 will be used in mobile devices in 2015.  Devices using the chip will probably start releasing in early 2016 but before that, MediaTek has already unveiled another new chip Helio P10 at the Computex.


Although Helio P10 is less powerful compared to Helio X20, it is more robust, efficient and offers a ”premium performance”. It is a 28nm chip having eight 64-bit Cortex-A53 cores which could be clocked at 2GHz. It falls somewhere between the X10 and the X20 chips in terms of CPU. Although Cortex-A57 cores are more powerful than Cortex-A53 cores, the A53s will help to prolong your battery life.


Helio P10 features a 700MHz dual-core 64-bit Mali-T860 graphics processor and Cat 6 LTE world mode support with up to 300 Mbps down speed and 50 Mbps up speed with career aggregation which is not available in X10.


The P10 also has the integrated TrueBright ISP engine which supports the “ultra-sensitive” RWWB optical sensors. MediaTek claims that these RWWB sensors capture two times the light captured by conventional RGB sensors and also provide a better color resolution.


The Helio P10 offers HiFi audio performance that has a rating of 110dB SNR and -95dB THD due to which device manufacturers won’t have to add a separate audio chip. Other useful feature of MediaTek’s P10 is that its MiraVision 2.0 will offer a smoother 60 fps FHD display, an efficient BluLight defender mode for reducing eye fatigue and an Ultradimming mode for night reading.


MediaTek has disclosed that it will start the shipping of Helio P10 chip in the third quarter of 2015 and we can expect the first device to surface by late 2015 which will be before the X20 device makes an appearance.

MediaTek Announced Helio X20 with Tri-cluster of 10-core SoC

MediaTek has announced their latest SoC for smartphones and tablets recently which goes by the name of Helio X20. The new smart chip will have a 10 core System-on-a-Chip design which will be arranged to a tri-cluster orientation. Currently, smart chips available in the market are arranged in a dual cluster big.LITTLE heterogeneous CPU designs.


One of the clusters will have a low power quad-core A53 cluster clocked at 1.4GHz, another cluster will have a power/performance balanced quad-core A53 cluster clocked at 2.0GHz while the last cluster will have an extreme performance dual-core A72 cluster which clocked in at 2.5GHz.  On top of that to connect them together, MediaTek will use a custom interconnect IP called MediaTek Coherent System Interconnect (MCSI).


There are a few innovative that can be found from this SoC. One of them is MediaTek’s first CDMA2000 compatible integrated modem with Helio X20. The new X20’s modem supports LTE Release 11 Category 6 with 20+20MHz Carrier Aggregation (downstream) which means that the download speed is 300Mbps whereas the upload speed is 50Mbps. On top of that the new modem consumes 30% less power than the previous Helio X10 SoC. Furthermore, it is also integrated with 802.11ac Wi-Fi which has a single spatial stream up to 280Mbps as specified in the spec sheets.


It is surely going to be interesting to find out how this tri-cluster design will perform in the practice. The X20 samples are planning to be shipped in Q1 2016.

MediaTek Announced Helio Chipset Range to Compete with Qualcomm and Samsung SoC

MediaTek announced two new ranges of processors which will be used in high-end smartphones, Helio X and Helio P SoC. Hopefully with these two new chipsets, they will bring the gap closer between MediaTek and other chipset market leader such as Qualcomm or even Samsung.


There is not much information released for Helio P, however, for Helio X or specifically Helio X10, it is a 64-bit chipset with eight Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 2.2GHz. On top of that Helio X10 can support refresh rate up to 120Hz and slow-motion video recording up to 480fps in undisclosed resolution. This is considered better compared to the devices which are also supporting slow motion feature such as iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus which can record videos at only 240fps.


As for Helio P, eventhough there is not much information released currently, it is described to fall into the premium performance chipset category. The similarities between Helio X and Helio P is that both chipsets offer high-performance and low power consumption.  The first smartphone which will be powered by Helio chipset are expected to launch in Q2 2015.

Sony unveils Xperia E4, a budget smartphone with 5” qHD display, MediaTek SoC and a two day-battery life

Even as everyone is waiting for Sony to announce its next flagship, the Xperia Z4, the Japanese smartphone maker has quietly announced Xperia E4, a new addition to its Xperia family. The Xperia E4 has some premium features but comes with highly competitive pricing. It is the successor to Xperia E3 that was introduced in September last year along with Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact.


Although Xperia E4 has the same OmniBalance design as other Sony devices, it appears noticeably different. It has more rounded edges and thinner bezels than its predecessor. The E4 has a scratch resistant screen, an aluminum power button with diamond-cut and a stainless steel camera ring giving it a premium look.


Specs-wise, it is an entry-level phone with a 5-inch qHD IPS 540 x 960p resolution display, a quad-core Mediatek MT6582 SoC clocked at 1.3GHz, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage of which about 5GB are available to the user. There is a microSD card slot for expansion, a 5MP primary camera and a 2MP selfie camera.


Xperia E4 has a 2,300 mAh battery with a two day battery life.  It also has a Stamina and Ultra Stamina modes to prolong the battery life. The device runs Android 4.4.4 KitKat and is available in two versions – single SIM and Dual SIM, but no LTE. The handset has dimensions of 137 x 74.6 x 10.5mm and a weight of 144 grams. It will be available in White and Black color variants.


According to Sony, both the Xperia E4 variants will hit the shelves in mid-February. Its pricing has not been disclosed yet. It is also not known if the device will be available in the US.

MediaTek brings a new 64-bit octa-core chipset MT6753 will full connectivity suite

Few days back, there was news of the Taiwan based chipset giant MediaTek planning to enter the US markets and now the company has went out announcing its new 64-bit octa-core chipset the MT6753 with independent eight-core CPU based on ARM’s Cortex A-53 architecture.


The great thing is that this new chi[set from the company comes with a complete connectivity suite and can be used for the around the world networks. The list of connectivity options include some supported networks like FDD LTE Cat 4 offering data speeds of 150Mbps, TD-LTE, TD-SCDMA, HSPA+ and EDGE. Moreover, this new chipset is also available with CDMA2000 1x / EVDO Rev. A radio frequencies. The good thing is that the chipset also works with Bluetooth 4.0, Miracast and dual-band Wi-Fi.


Additionally, the chipset can also support resolution of 1080×1920 pixels at 60fps. It can also enable video playback chip H.264 1080p with 30fps and even H.265 consuming less power. It can drive a camera with a resolution up to 16MP. The company is expecting to release the chipset by the end of second quarter.

Taiwan based chip giant MediaTek plans to enter US markets

Taiwan based chip maker MediaTek needs no introduction as the company’s baked chipsets are found in most of the affordable smartphones sold by handset manufacturers across the globe. MediTek has a wide gain popularity in many affordable Chinese handset and has a strong foothold in the Asian market. Now the company seems to be planning to move a step further and venture into the US markets by opening up its first office in San Diego. This means MediaTek is also set to raise the competition further with its arch rival Qualcomm which too is established player in US market and across globe. However, for now it’s only T-Mobile carrier that is selling MediTek powered devices from Alcatel in the US markets.


However, Qualcomm is currently much ahead of the race hen it comes to market share globally, but it seems that the entry into US markets would surely help MediaTek bridge the gap. Making their business strategy clear, at CES 2015, company president Ching-Jiang Hsieh was heard saying “If you intend to be the most global [player] in the mobile business you should be selling a chip in North America.”


US carriers are often seeing pushin up their plans for new handsets and it could turn out to be a good opportunity for MediaTek to enter the affordable ranged handsets market in the country. However, this is certainly not going to be a cake walk as Qualcomm has already gained popularity here as well as its chips have made home to Lumia 535 and Moto G like handsets. Moreover, within the user community, MediaTek is much less popular compared to Qualcomm.


Jon Erensen, Gartner research director looks it as a good opportunity for MediTek in US market, but like Intel, MediaTek too will have tought fight with Qualcomm.

MediaTek Next Processor: 10-core or 12-core Processors

According to insider news, it is reported that MediaTek, a Taiwan-based chip manufacturer might be working on a 10-core or 12-core processors.  There are no further details on when the processors will starts the mass production or released to the public.  However, if everything is working according to plan, these processors will be used in the smartphone technology.


On the other side, currently there are not many apps which can support the advantages of 4-cores let alone 10-core or 12-core processors. therefore, there is not really a big different on the usage experience. However,it is indeed a big jump.


MediaTek’s competitor Qualcomm has released a mid-range Snapdragon 615 and high-range Snapdragon 810 which features 8-cores last year. Below is the video on Qualcomm’s opinion on MediaTek’s octa-core chips.

MediaTek Introduces New Chip for Android Wear

MediaTek announced the latest chip MT2601 Soc for Google’s Android Wear software. The new chip will have 41.5% fewer components and lower current consumption in its small size when compared with other chipsets in the market. This will lead to a few advantages like lower bill of materials (BoM) costs, smaller printed circuit board (PCB) size as well as longer battery life. Moreover, with this entire high quality feature, it will make a longer usage time and more affordable price of wearable device.


MT2601 will include 1.2GHz dual core ARM Cortex-A7, ARM Mali-400 MP GPU. It also supports qHD display resolution. On top of that, the chipset also interfaces with external sensors and wireless connectivity SoC MT6630 for Bluetooth. All of these is fitted to a PCBA footprint of less than 480 mm2 which is the size suitable for the design requirement of a wearable device in sports and fitness, location tracking and other categories.


MediaTek noted that this chipset will developed for Android Wear and will continue to change according to the Android Wear requirement. MT2601 is in mass production now.

The platform solution, comprised of MT2601 integrated with Android Wear software, will fuel the maker revolution and empower the application developer community worldwide to create a broad range of innovative applications and services,” said JC Hsu, GM of New Business Development at MediaTek.

The New Manta X7 Smartphone is buttonless, has “smart Bezels” instead

With cut-throat competition prevailing in the smartphone market, manufacturers are coming out with new innovations in their devices in order to capture public interest. During the course of smartphone evolution, we have seen the number of physical buttons slowly diminishing and the touchscreen taking its place. Currently, the latest smartphones have only the power button, home button and the volume rocker.

Now Manta, a Chinese company is developing its first smartphone Manta X7 and has put out some teaser images proclaiming it as the “smartphone from tomorrow”. Why? Because this smartphone has no buttons on it. It is a buttonless phone! It has no power, volume or any other buttons and appears to be smooth and sleek.


Instead of buttons, the new Manta X7 will have smart bezels. In the smart bezel system, the left and right sides will have touch sensors that can be used to turn the phone on or off and to control the volume. The handset will have a “hot thumb” area on the screen that can detect thumb gestures of the user. This will bring up the various apps near the thumb such as the dialer pad.

Specs and other details of the upcoming Manta X7 have not been revealed by the teasers. But it will probably be powered by MediaTek. The handset is expected to be launched in China by this month end.

MediaTek to come up with two octa-core 64-bit chipsets in 2015

Earlier this year, there were rumors that chip making giant MediaTek is likely to come up with 4G enabled chipsets. Well, the company seems to be all set to compete with its rival Qualcomm that is standing at the top of the chipset industry with most flagship smartphones having its Snapdragon processing chipsets. The company is also set and geared up for its roadmap of 2015 and is most likely to come up with its two new powerful octa-core SoCs.


One of these chipsets would be MediaTek’s new 64-bit MT6753 and this is likely to arrive in the H2 of 2015. This is probably a successor to the current company top-end octa-core MT6752 Soc. This new offering is likely to sport eight Cortex A53 cores however their clock rate would be little lower as compared to the existing MT6572’s 1.7GHz, where four of its cores would be running at 1.5GHz and the remaining four at 1.3GHz. This new chipset is believed to be having an similar Mali T760 GPU aboard with the same earlier Image signal processor along with a 16MP camera support.

This new MT6753 octa-core chipset is said to have an added support for more 3G/4G bands along with a CDMA2000 1x and EVDO Rev A. this chipset would also arrive with its own toned-down version the MT6753M that would support qHD displays with 540×960 pixel resolution and up to 8MP of camera. Both these chipsets are believed to come up at the mid-range levels where MediaTek holds a strong dominance currently in the market. Well, is currently not clear whether these new chipset would be running the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop or not, but that can be quite very well expected.

MediaTek expects 2 million Android One Handsets to be sold in India this year

Taiwan-based chip maker MediaTek is happy with the overwhelming response to the three Android One-based smartphones launched in India on the 15th of this month. Google has launched the first three Android One smartphones in India with its hardware partners Micromax, Karbonn and Spice.


According to reports, the first lot of Micromax Canvas A1 smartphones on Amazon has already been sold out. Looking to the initial response, MediaTek expects 1.5 to 2 million Android One handsets to be sold in India this year.


Mediatek has partnered with Google on the Android One initiative for providing high-quality Android experience at affordable prices to users in emerging markets such as India. Caesar Sengupta, VP of Product Management at Google says, “Together with an ecosystem of partners, including MediaTek, we’re building a future where high-quality smartphones are accessible to mainstream consumers at affordable prices.”


The three smartphones launched by Google in the Android One family are Micromax Canvas A1, Karbon Sparkle V and Spice Dream UNO all priced between INR 6000 to INR 6500 or about $100 to $105. All the devices carry MediaTek’s MT6582 SoC based on quad ARM CortexTM A7 processors.

All the three models sport a 4.5-inch 480 x 854 pixels IPS display, MediaTek MT6582 chipset with 1.3GHz quad-core Cortex-A7 CPU, Mali 400 MP2 GPU, 1GB RAM, 4GB internal memory expandable up to 32GB, 5MP rear camera, 2MP front camera and a 1700mAh battery.


One huge benefit for Android One devices is that the software upgrades will come directly from Google. As a result, the users will get quicker updates and Google will have a better control over the operating system to provide a consistent service to the users.


The approaching festival season in India might see a further spurt in the sales of Android One smartphones.
